An acid attack is a violent attack that involves throwing acid at any other person with the intent to destroy torture or kill. It is a form of violent attack that involves the throwing of acid or similar corrosive substances on the body of another person. The perpetrators of these attacks hurled corrosive liquids at the victims, usually in the face, burning them and destroying skin tissue, often exposing and even dissolving the bones. The acid attack usually causes permanent blindness.

 The definition of acid in the Indian Penal Code: According to Article 326 (A) of the Indian Penal Code, “acid” includes any substance with acidic, corrosive or burning properties that can cause bodily harm and cause scarring. , disfigurement or permanent disability. The long-term consequences of these attacks can include blindness, permanent scars on the face and body, and profound social, psychological and financial difficulties.

In India, there are many reasons why one person behaves so cruel to another. Some reported cases are rejection of marriage proposals, rejection of intimacy, personal conflicts, or disagreements over the payment of dowry. Victims of acid attacks suffer temporary or permanent physical disfigurement and often suffer mental trauma. When the victim committed suicide, many acid attacks in India ended. Acid is an immediate chemical substance that can disfigure a person temporarily or permanently. Some strong acids can even cause immediate death. The purpose of most acid attacks is to destroy the victim, not kill.

There are lots of causes of Acid attacks-

• Personal reasons
• Disputes regarding the properties or lands
• Family issues
• Rejection on Marriage proposals
• Not able to pay the dowry amount

So for reducing the acid attack there are some legal punishments which helps to reduce these attacks like in the year 2013 the amendment of section 326 of the Indian Penal Code i.e. the willful use of dangerous weapons or means to cause serious injury, there was no specific legislation to deal with or prosecute the cases of victims of acid attacks. The Supreme Court added section 326 (A) and section 326 (B) as amendments to section 326 in 2013, which specifically refer to acid attack cases. The minimum sentence under 326 (A) is 10 years and the maximum sentence is life imprisonment. According to article 326 (B), the minimum penalty is five years in prison, with a maximum of seven years.  As we have seen one of the case regarding thru acid attack which occur in May 2013, when the Supreme Court ruled on the case of Laxmi Agarwal, a Delhi victim, it issued instructions to states and federal territories to regulate the sale of acid and establish welfare policies for victims.

So there are lots of remedies to reduce the acid attacks:-

• To spread the awareness of the causes, consequences and greater prevention.
• More education and teaching should be provided on the consequences of such heinous crimes.
•  The severity of the punishment must be well communicated and the fear of the consequences of committing this crime must be generated in the mind of the offender.
• Non-governmental organizations and international organizations and these organizations that act as the voice of the people can help accelerate awareness on the issue and help provide compensation to victims.
•  Such an organization can further motivate people to better manage anger. Get justice for the victim: A good justice plan to deal with this type of crime can help. The perpetrators must face some serious accusations and punishments, and the victims must be compensated, as well as financial and spiritual support from society and the government.
