Will Lawyers be replaced by Artificial Intelligence ?

Computers and automation has affected the lives of people all around the world. While most companies and people were benefitted by this change, it proved to be brutal for some others, some people were left without any job and they did not possess the skills to be as fast or as accurate as the computers or automation machines that replaced their livelihood. It is estimated that by 2022, the total tasks done by humans will drop by 22%. Many jobs which were done by humans have been lost to automation such as lift operators, data entry clerks, cashiers, etc.

Earlier there used to be lift operators because the previous versions of elevators would not stop automatically between each floors and the lift operator had to time the seconds and stop accordingly; during the lockdown, people were cautious about going to stores and interacting with the cashiers, so Amazon and Walmart stores introduced stores where customers would be scanning the products and paying for them, thereby eliminating cashiers.

Earlier the only source of previous cases would be law journals or libraries and it was comparatively difficult to get hold of accurate facts and information. Laymen would have no clue about precedents and previous judgements. All that became simpler when technology stepped into the legal field. Any person has legal information on his fingertips. Of course, only advocates who are licensed can practice in court but the facts of cases, judgements and related cases are available on the internet for all to see. The advancements in technology has proved to be beneficial to paralegals and legal secretaries.

Recent Times

Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, courts are forced to conduct legal proceedings through online platforms. There are threats of information leaks and hackings but the courts must be prepared and take necessary precautions beforehand. All the evidences, and other materials must be submitted online. It is easier to make corrections and the materials may be accessed by many people at the same time. Judges and lawyers are getting accustomed to the new normal.

Can AI replace human lawyers?

This question has been answered by many judges and legal luminaries and they all share the same opinion. While computers can access a humungous amount of data and store vast amount of information in their memory, they do not and cannot have the human mind or the human thinking. A computer may suggest the most apt punishment after accessing a lot of data but in court, each new case may be viewed from a different perspective and the verdict which seemed right in a previous case may turn out to be an unjust judgement in a new case with similar facts. Thus, new technology with the latest updates may be used in the legal field for providing assistance and for fetching information quickly but they cannot be relied upon to take up the role of judges and advocates. Technology should be used for making human work easier hence artificial intelligence and technology should be considered our slave and not our master.
