Environmental issues are the result of the devastating effects of human activities on the biophysical environment. Social and environmental movements can address environmental issues through advocacy and activism. Environmental hazards raise the risk of cancer, heart disease, asthma, and many other illnesses.
The Uttarakhand Pollution Control Board
The Uttarakhand Pollution Control Board (UKPCB) is a statutory Organization constituted under the section 4 of Water (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Act, 1974 to implement Environmental Laws and rules within the jurisdiction of Uttarakhand. The UEPPCB came into existence on 1st May 2002 and functions through its Head Office at Dehradun and its 4 Regional Offices, Dehradun, Roorkee, Haldwani & Kashipur.
Subsequently, the implementation of Spring (Prevention and Control of Pollution) Cess Act, 1977; Air (Prevention And Control Of Pollution) Act, 1981; Environment Protection Act (1986). These rules are established to preserve the environment, and to some degree, they have proven to be beneficial, but specific rules are yet to be set for the city’s improvement.
Currently, the Air quality in Dehradun is inferior due to Air pollution. The roots of air pollutants incorporate vehicles, industries, domestic and natural sources. The presence of air pollutants in the ambient air resentfully affects the health of the population. Automobile emissions, industrial emission and burning of fossil fuels add a large amount of air pollution in the Dehradun city of Uttarakhand. This emission was deteriorating the ambient air quality and which further causing a lot of health problem.
Why is it harmful? When inhaled, pollution irritates our airways, increasing our risk of acute heart and lung conditions. These health risks are why many cities monitor air pollution levels. On a high ozone-alert day, for example, your eyes and throat may burn, and you may cough and gasp. According to a World Health Organization (WHO) released in 2016, Dehradun is the 15th most polluted city in India, though, it is the 31st most polluted city globally.
Once deemed a green city, the addition of Dehradun in the record of the most polluted cities in the world is startling. It is anticipated to affect the air quality and climate in the region. Main Cause Apart from the industrial area near Dehradun, Tourism also plays a vital role in causing air pollution. Tourism has an advantage as a contributor to economic development.
Tourism is held responsible for climate change at several destinations. Scientists have proved that constant changes in the climate due to the greenhouse effect and tourism also contribute to it in the form of movement of people to destinations through automobiles and other means of continuous transport which further cause air pollution.
