According to reports, the news of an imminent third wave of the pandemic has caused chaos in college student’s personal and professional lives. Psychologists in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) claim that whenever there is a discussion of the third wave of Covid-19, they get more calls from young people than they did in the previous year.
Despite the fact that the second wave has passed and the number of Covid-19 cases in the capital has decreased, the rumour of an imminent third wave seems to be causing chaos in the lives of university students. When there is a word of a third wave approaching, psychiatrists in the city report that the number of calls from college students rises, as does their worry and stress level, according to the psychologists.
“Whenever there is a word of a third wave, I get the feeling that I will never be able to return to college! We were certain that by then we’d have returned to the offline campus, but that hasn’t occurred yet. Everything just serves to increase our sense of isolation,” says Viveka Goswami, a student at Sri Venkateswara College of Delhi University who had been awaiting the start of her final year courses. “We were under the impression that once we were vaccinated, everything would be OK. In every conversation, we have with our parents, or with anybody else for that purpose, we hear them bragging about how they accomplished this or that while in college and “and much is already being missed by us, and if a third wave is required, will we ever see or be in college again?” ” We’re not sure why.
It is nearly instantaneous. When there is word of when the third wave will strike or anything else about it for that matter, According to Anu Goel, a Delhi-based psychologist, “They are reacting to the reality that the epidemic seems to be an endless occurrence.” She cites her experience of fielding numerous calls from worried students as an example.
“In reality, we didn’t get many calls from kids last year,” said the director. However, this year, the number has unquestionably increased,” says Anvi Grover Jain, a counselling psychologist based in Delhi, who emphasises how and why the news of the third wave is having a negative impact on the mental health of young people. “One of my patients had just finished high school and was overjoyed to be able to pursue her master’s degree at college. “She even managed to complete her studies at Jawaharlal Nehru University. However, the prospect of not being able to physically attend college was causing her considerable anxiety. Jain continues, “Young people believe that they are losing out on job chances since they are unable to attend college.”
Imran Noorani, associate professor, and consultant chief psychologist at Sir Ganga Ram Hospital, adds that many of his young patients are also upset as a result of taking a year off to travel or work abroad. “Some college students left college because they didn’t want to take classes online in a pandemic-affected world,” he said. And now they are concerned because they believe they will not be able to enrol in college anytime soon as a result of the third wave, and they have already lost a year as a result of this. “
