INTRODUCTION
Strengthening its position as one of the top five nations in terms of solar energy, and setting an example of how to blend growth with the green cause, India inaugurated Asia’s largest solar power project in Rewa in Madhya Pradesh on July 10th 2020. While boosting India’s concerned bid to achieve self-reliance in power and fulfil wider objective of self-reliant India Campaign, the new solar power plant project will reduce emission equivalent to approximately 15 lakhs tonnes of carbon dioxide every year.
India is among the top five countries in the world in terms of solar power.
Experts see opening of the Rewa project as another push to India’s ambitious plans to achieve the 175 GW of installed renewable energy capacity by 2022. India has a target of solar power generation capacity of 500 GW by 2030, as part of its climate commitments.
SOLAR SIGNIFICANCE
India’s installed power generation capacity. The country currently relies on fossil fuel imports every year (oil, diesel, LNG, cooking and thermal coal). The Rewa Project is the first solar project in the country to break the grid parity hurdle.
The Rewa project has been acknowledged in India and abroad for its robust project structuring and innovations. Its payment security mechanism for reducing risks to power developers has been recommended as a model to other states.
The solar plant is the first renewable energy project to supply to an institutional customer outside the state. The plant has also significantly taken the global vision of ‘One Sun One World, One Grid’ (OSOWOG) by our Prime Minister, which particularly aims at fulfilling the energy needs of many smaller nations on the planet.
The futuristic vision of OSOWOG vision, sees India becoming a global solar leader by encouraging the development for the same. The Ministry of New & Renewable energy has invited proposals for implementation of the plan, roadmap and framework for development of the long-term vision of OSOWOG.
FUNCTIONING OF SOLAR PLANT
Most of our energy comes from burning fossil fuels, a process that emits carbon dioxide. That results in the greenhouse effect leading to global warming. Solar panel do not produce greenhouse gasses while generating electricity as produced by using fuels like coal and natural gas.
Power Grid Corporation of India has developed the inter-state transmission system under green corridor to facilitate evacuation of power from the project site to consumers.
It has two purchasers, Madhya Pradesh Power Management Company Limited (MPPMCL) and Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC). MPPMCL will hold 76% of the total bulk and DMRC will take 26% of the remaining. It is also the first project that got funding from The World Bank.
HURDLES FOR THE DEVELOPMENT
The domestic manufacturing of the solar plant is behind due to reasons such as lack of manufacturing chain, low skilled workforce and higher cost of productivity. The solar module required for generation of such a massive amount of solar energy can be obtained through imports. The capacity needs 75 million solar modules every year.
This means that India, which is trying to push its domestic manufacturing, may still end up depending largely on imports of the solar modules from other countries.
If we consider India’s huge plan of solar targets and the electricity strategy for the upcoming development, India needs to strategize the manufacturing of solar modules and reduce its dependency on imports.
CONCLUSION
Solar energy is the cheapest and most abundant energy source in the world. In December 2016, the cost of building and installing new solar electricity generation dropped, narrowly beating out its renewable counterpart wind and its fossil fuel competitors.
Unlike other sources of energy, solar power is free of noise pollution. It has no moving parts and does not require any additional fuel, other than sunlight, to produce power.
Agriculture- the backbone of Indian economy is totally dependent on a fine irrigation system. Irregularities in traditional power supply is quite common in India & it could affect power of the water pumps, harming the crops. The easy on pocket solution for this is solar water pumps, where solar energy powers the water irrigation system.
We should start contributing towards making the earth a better place to live by using solar power for our home and business energy generation.

I have always been against Glorifying Over Work and therefore, in the year 2021, I have decided to launch this campaign “Balancing Life”and talk about this wrong practice, that we have been following since last few years. I will be talking to and interviewing around 1 lakh people in the coming 2021 and publish their interview regarding their opinion on glamourising Over Work.
