Few days back BCCI (Board of control for in India) announced the annual player retainership 2020-2021 for both Male and Female cricketers separately. While looking at the payscale there’s a bundle of questions began to rise. Somebody said it’s a gender discrimination, somebody might say it’s a skill based division of the players all along.
According to BCCI, The senior Men’s team player’s payment structeres are divided into 4 grades. ‘A+’, ‘A’, ‘B’, ‘C’ are the 4 categories. ‘A+’ gets INR 7 cr. Per annum, ‘A’ grade players get INR 5 cr per annum, ‘B’ grade players gets INR 3 cr and ‘C’ grade players get INR 1 cr per annum. There are total 28 male players were mentioned in the annual contract. Some popular players like Virat kohli and Rohit sharma gets ‘A+’ contract.
The senior Women team players payscale is divided into 3 grades, Grade ‘A’, ‘B’ & ‘C’. Grade ‘A’ gets INR 50 lakhs per annum. Grade ‘B’ & ‘C’ gets INR 30 lakhs and 10 lakhs per annum respectively. Total 19 players are mentioned in the annual contract by BCCI. Popular players like Ms Harmanpreet Kaur, Ms Smriti Mandhana and Ms Poonam Yadav gets Grade ‘A’ annual contract.
The “Discrimination” or the “Comparison” of the players is not the latest trend but it’s the every year story since 2015. Many debates, many articles overshadowed the main problem and the issue got the title of “Gender discrimination”. Many of the Female cricketers broke their silence on the issue like Smriti Mandhana said at an event that “it’s obvious because men cricketers sell more tickets and get more brand endorsements than female cricketers”.
While looking at the records and the achievements gain by female cricketers individually or as an unit from past 5 years is unbelievable.

- Zhulan Goswami is the Highest wicket taker in International cricket.
- Team India reached the final of ICC World Cup 2017
- Team India reached the final of ICC T-20 World Cup.
While comparing the Indian women cricket team with other competitors as Australia and England women cricket teams, Indian players are seems to have more perks than these 2 teams. Neither Australian cricket board nor English Cricket Board disclose the salaries of especially women’s team on any platform. From the last 2 years BCCI arranged the women’s domestic league also. The only factor lacked by BCCI is the vision to see each and every cricketer by their Batting, Bowling and Leadership skills.
The last decade brought revolutionary changes in both Men as well as Women Indian cricket team. India won the world cup in 2011 and immediately won champions trophy in 2013. IPL (Indian Premier League) became the biggest and popular domestic league in the world. It led BCCI to become the richest cricket board in the world. Obviously, The Men’s cricket team is more active on the cricket field than female cricket team. This led to the unfair distribution of the salaries to the players.
Each and every player whether Male or Female dreams to represent our country at the highest level as they have the right to do so according to the article 14 & 21 of the Indian Constitution. Everyone works hard equally but few players failed to perform and few become legends of the game. Whether it is any game the Higher authority and Regulating body should compare anyone on their skill base not the social engagements or brand endorsements. The common work ethics should be apply here because everyone has their debts to pay.
