Justice Rekha Palli (born March 9, 1963) is an Indian judge who currently serves on the Delhi High Court. She has presided over a number of high-profile political cases, including the disqualification of Aam Aadmi Party MLAs, the enrolment requirements for the Central Industrial Security Force, and the disappearance of Delhi University student Najeeb Ahmad. Justice Palli also defended Indian Air Force officers in a landmark case that resulted in the abolition of a discriminatory practise that prevented female officers from receiving permanent appointments. Justice Palli attended the Lady Irwin School in New Delhi and studied physics at Hindu College before earning a law degree from Delhi University’s Faculty of Law in 1986. After passing the bar in 1986, Justice Palli practised law in Delhi, as well as at the Punjab and Haryana High Court and the Supreme Court of India.
The Delhi High Court appointed her as a senior counsel in 2015.Justice Palli defended nine Indian Air Force women officers in a case in which they challenged the force’s policy of refusing women officers permanent appointments. The suit was launched in response to a Supreme Court judgement directing the Indian Army to give permanent commissions to female officers in the same manner as male officers.
After the Delhi High Court decided in favour of providing competent women officers permanent commissions, the Indian Air Force began granting females short service commissions. Justice Palli was nominated to the Delhi High Court as a judge on May 15, 2017.Justice Palli ordered the case of Delhi University student Najeeb Ahmad’s disappearance and suspected murder to be forwarded to the Central Bureau of Investigation after an alleged argument with members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad.Following demonstrations by Delhi University students over the absence of results while the issue was being probed by the Delhi Police, the case attracted substantial public attention.
Justice Palli heard a politically significant case in 2018 involving the disqualification of twenty-three Aam Aadmi Party members of the Delhi Legislative Assembly. The matter drew a lot of attention before Justice Palli agreed to let it be dropped with the permission of the parties Justice Palli and another judge, Justice Hima Kohli, ruled in 2018 that the Union Government had the legal authority to fire members of the Central Industrial Security Force who tested colorblind.
