Brain Drain is delineate as emigration or migration of individuals competencies, aptitudes and skills from developing or under-developed countries to developed ones. It means impoverishment of intellectuals, efficiencies, and technical resources , knowledge and cognitions of one country and intensifying and enriching another.
From plethora of decades, India’s skilled ,experienced and professionals have cherry-picked emigrating to abroad to cater of better jobs, lucrative salaries and higher standards of living. Today’s millennials are keen to emulate the same course for its like a ritual now days that reaching abroad make then affluencial anyway.
Migrating to variety of places worldwide in pursuit of lucrative careers and world-class education was considered a massive achievement for Indians few decades back because India simply not acquire such professional prospects like other countries. However,most of the professionals decides to return to their country having intention to create business opportunities, become contributors to capital inflows in the country and accelerate the Indian economy to introduce it to the global market.
Today, India is just a decade away from ameliorating itself from status of developing country to developed and superpower nation, but hard luck follow us, history is replicating itself. This time, millennials are leaving the country not for the dearth of jobs on their domestic shores, but for better standard of living and quality life, higher salaries, access to advanced technology and more stable political conditions across international borders, causing for concern for the economic health and ends up losing its major skilled workforce.
Higher education is considered the major reasons for permanent immigration. For the sky-rocketing cut-offs for admissions reaching close to 100% in top Indian universities, with wrenching students end up compromising on their dream of securing a seat in any of the prestigious Indian universities. This assist them to scout the boundary of higher education abroad and secure a seat in good universities as they have an advantage over students from others having dominance in fringes of skills and knowledge. For sake of the global exposure and access to high-quality life and amenities, besides the students become reluctant to stay in their home country, even the country’s skilled workforce decides to step out to cope up with their peers who are settled abroad.
Most of the educational institutions of our country India are emphasizing on textbook education and theoretical learning which fails to equip students with skills that will make them job-ready. This ends up forming a huge widening gap between requirements of industries and academic knowledge. According to the latest India Skill Report, educational institutions in India which are employable are only 47%. This clearly directs towards need for broadened access to formal, basic and higher education systems, as well as investing more on reskilling and upskilling the students and present workforce consequently skip the idea of leaving the country.
In today’s scenario students cannot be restricted to a single-stream of knowledge. Emphasis must be on industry-academia partnerships, as they keep educational institutes in tune with ameliorating industry requirements and drive them to elviliate programmes that respond fluently to their demands.
