Breathe: Into the Shadows a review

Star Cast: Abhishek A Bachchan, Nithya Menen, Amit Sadh, Shraddha Kaul, Saiyami Kher.

Finally I watched Breathe: Into the Shadows on Amazon Prime and I really enjoyed it. It is actually like a Breath of fresh air.

The basic crux of the story is Avinash Sabharwal’s, who is a renouned Psychiatrist from Delhi, his daughter Siya, a 6 year old is kidnapped when she goes to her friend’s birthday party. Avinash and Abha’s world comes crashing down, when the kidnapper does not contact them for about 9 months. One fine day the Kidnapper contacts them and asks them to do some task in they would like to see their daughter back happy and alive.

A child getting kidnapped is the worst nightmare for any parent. Any parent would go to any extent to save their daughter. Would Avinash and Abha also go down to any extent to save their daughter ? Would they also fall into the trap laid down by the kidnapper ? You need to watch till the end of the show to know all that.

I did not find it much interesting but slow in the first couple of episodes but slowly as the show progressed it was gripping. I love thriller movies, shows, web-series because it keeps me thinking. Though this show was a bit slow compared to its hollywood counter parts but it covered one of the most important aspects of our lives. Mental Health.

Talking about Mental Health is a taboo in our society, we just have a few designated slang words decided for the people who suffer from Mental Health, pagal, Buddhu, Psycho, depressed, sadist. But we are seldom aware what a person, suffering from mental health issue is going through.

I loved the way Avinash Sabharwal (Abhishekh A Bachchan’s ) character was written. He seems normal from his appearance but nobody knows the battle that he is fighting from within. We often think it is the freedom granted by the law of marriage that one spouse can abuse the other spouse. But how often have we spoken or thought about the children that undergo the same ? Children are the biggest victims of Domestic Abuse indirectly. Unfortunately, emotional scars cannot be seen and therefore, they take forever to heal.

Loneliness is another emotion in Human Being. The people who genuinely feel lonely never boast about how lonely they feel. They often try to hide their loneliness under hood. Homosexuality is another topic that is covered by this series in a very comfortable way, without creating a haywire or a halla about the same. The topics, which we would not consider discussing in broad day light as they do not exist as per the crowd, have been brilliantly covered in this series.

Till date no Indian Show has openly discussed Human Emotions without over exagerration. That is what is the best part about the show. There was no overacting or over expression by anybody. Everyone was behaving normally going about their daily routine. The lead characters of Avinash Sabharwal (Abhishek A Baccchan), Abha Sabharwal (Nitya Menen), Kabir Sawant (Amit Sadh), just fit so perfectly into their respective charcters. Amit Sadh as a Police Officer is convincing without any overacting like Salman Khan in his Dabang Movies. But the character that I loved the most was Principal Krishnan Moorthy played by Nizhalgal Ravi. His character is smooth and flawless and his screen prescence is very strong.

Saiyami Kher as Shirley is also a delight to watch. No overacting by any of the characters or actors is the best part.

It is important that through television we normalise seeking of help for mental health. Instead of showing the issues of mental health in an over dramatised way, the presentation of this show has made it simple. Hats off to Abhijeet Deshpande and Mayank Sharma (Writers of the show) for presenting such a sensitive topic in the strongest way. The show is also directed by Mayank Sharma, bringing out the best from all the actors.

We often need to wait for a celebrity like Pratyusha Banerjee or Sushant Singh Rajput to commit Suicide so that people can start talking about mental health. For two days twitter will chatter about Mental Health and then on the third day this conversation will die a natural death. I hope such web series will make the topic of Mental Health a normal conversation.

I really enjoyed watching this series. It is available on Amazon Prime, which you can still go ahead and watch it.
