Suppose you are graduated from law school and still don’t have a job. Well, you’re not alone in this; there are many others like you. Due to the COVID-19 crises, many lost their jobs, while some even didn’t get a chance to work. At the same time, many laws school graduates are also there who didn’t have jobs lined up right away after law school. Eventually, they went on to land great jobs at the right time or started their practice! Even some are leading admirable careers. Don’t lose hope; you have plenty of time to work on yourself.
Spending your days looking and applying to get jobs after finishing law school can feel like a burden on your shoulders. While it might also make you feel like a failure even though you have just successfully graduated from law school.
Remember having a job or not after law school does not go to define you. It might not be easier to believe in it. But the truth is your legal career is being started. Eventually, you will land on your feet.
- Time to Explore Career Preferences
It is worth it important about how your personality fits into the legal world. It is easy to apply blindly to any job. Although, it’s ultimately preferable and more productive and effective to engage in some self-analysis about your personality, work style, skills and job preferences.
Getting one informational interview a week can make a huge difference and help you in going forward. Even if you are opting for the bar exam full-time, you still need to go through it. And it also doesn’t take too much time.
- You Want to Be a Lawyer?
It is important to think carefully whether you want to practice law or not. The decision not to practice can be a challenging one to make. If it is Yes, then start developing your skills. But if the answer is no, it’s far better to realize that now – before you’ve committed several more years to develop an increasingly specialized skill set.
- Keep looking for Entrepreneurial Legal Paths
If you surely want to be a lawyer, then give some time for yourself. Consider opening a solo practice or starting your career as a freelance attorney. It may be scary and intimidating to work on your own right after law school. But there are lots of people who have done it, and it’s not impossible!
Several resources exist to help legal freelancers and solo practices.
- Plan Your Job Search
If you need a perfect job for yourself. First, you have to look at yourself, your personality, skills and more. Secondly, choose where and with whom you want to work. Everything should be sought in your mind. Lastly, work on your resume.
You need to ask yourself, is your resume up to date? If it is ready, then think about all these questions- Do you have an introductory cover letter ready to go? Have you gotten feedback on your interview skills? Are you monitoring job resources to see what’s available? All these questions will give a bonus point and help you find the job you are looking forward to joining.
- Resume and Cover letter
Spend more time curating and updating your CV and cover letter. It is tempting to send your CV and cover letter in mass. But I recommend spending meaningful time on your applications. Especially cover letter. Often some applicants overlook the power of a good cover letter. At the same time, it might be the key to getting you an interview.
The cover letter is a law firm’s first glimpse of writing abilities, research abilities, and thought processes. The cover letter gives opportunity to showcase yourself in front of a firm. It will also help the firm to know about your advocacy skills and how you would be a good fit for them. Neve rdraft a standard cover letter for every firm you apply to. Give each of your cover letters character suited to the job you are applying for. It will increase the chances of getting an interview.
- Network
Some law firms open up a position for a specific student they like more than once, even though they are not planning to hire anyone. LinkedIn can be an amazing place to develop the network.
Even cold-calling or cold e-mailing firms is also a good idea; it works. But remember to be respectful. Don’t pursue it further if you don’t hear back after follow-ups.
- Don’t beg in front of big law firms
Never limit yourself to big law firms. We usually forget that a small practice or even solo practitioner might be willing to give a job. Even there are also legal departments within businesses, organizations, and government agencies where you can apply to. So, think smartly.
It is recommended to join a very small attorney’s office. There you can learn the ropes of what it would take to own your own practice in the future. You’re still very young.
- Actively find and make amazing friends
Nowadays it is important reasons to college make new networks that will help you build your career. Never fall into the trap of complacency. Do something scary at least once a week and try to have a conversation with at least one new person a week. Don’t limit yourself to the people around you. Meet and friends of all age groups it will help you to get a different perspective of life. Get used to making friends with people older and younger than you.
- Travel as much as you can
Take an immersive trip somewhere for yourself, the fact is life is much more harried. The trip will help you to get experience and exposure, Go explores new places, experience other cultures, and broaden your horizons it is a great opportunity to do so.
- Develop a reading habit
Reading gives you life experiences in short term, but half of the population is interested in spending time on social media rather than reading books. Developing reading habits helps one to look at life from others aspects. Start this habit by simply reading fiction books. It is great, though non-fiction books are what will cause true change to your life.
Read self-improvement books, mindset books, career books, anything that will help you develop as a person. Making money can be a learned skill, as are so many other things in life you wouldn’t think of. All the information is out there, you just have to simply read it and implement it in your daily life.
- Obtain internships and work experience
[It is for those who haven’t graduated] Start looking for internships from college days, it will give you experience. It will also increase the chance of getting a job. You do NOT want to be one of those people who have great grades but no work experience. It can’t land a job after graduation. Remember having the name of a prestigious company on your resume can open a lot of doors.
- Exercise at least 3 times a week
Countless studies are proving the benefits of exercise, not just for physical health, but also for cognitive and mental abilities. Going to the gym can be a keystone habit for life long. Develop this habit early, because the older you get, the more difficult it is to start working out. Make use of the gym, pool, and other facilities available to you. Consider joining an intramural sports team. Try new hobbies – squash, archery, curling, Quidditch – and kill two birds with one stone by making new friends and working out.
- Meditate
Meditation helps in knowing the true self. Daily meditation for 5-10 minutes a day can turn your life in a positive way. It will help you to know clearly about your life decisions as in your desires. goals, the reason behind your happiness and many more. It will definitely increase your ability to better make decisions and develop your thinking process in a good sense.
- Never give up.
Always make sure to give your best, even if you don’t get a job at first. Should take breaks? Yes, definitely. Especially if you are tired of the constant applications, don’t ever give up. There will be a job out there for you somewhere if you are determined, consistent, and sincere.
- Keep your spirits up and stay optimistic.
Let’s define success as finishing, no matter what your grade is. Remember, a large majority of the population still cannot achieve what you have by going to law school and finishing successfully. You have a reason to celebrate.
