When we talk about Israeli Palestinian balance of power then in terms of all materialistic and political factors, Israel has an evident advantage in case of any future confrontations but also confer an important diplomatic advantage, in the sense that Israel controls most of the stakes in the dispute and therefore has a less urgent need to change the status quo. Since the peace process essentially involves Palestinian demands on Israel with respect to territory, refugees and other issues, a stalemate implies continuing Palestinian inability to achieve their objectives, hence, a clearer Palestinian incentive to change the status quo, if not by coercion, then through agreement.
However, Israeli dominance in most categories of the power balance cannot be easily transferred into useable strength in negotiations or a military conflict. For one thing, not all of Israel’s military might can be used in the kind of low-intensity battle that is most likely to win in the event of fresh bloodshed, such as urban warfare. Furthermore, the power disparity causes local and international constraints on Israel to refrain from fully using its dominance. Israel is frequently expected to demonstrate political generosity or military self-restraint as the stronger side with the majority of the stakes in the conflict.
Furthermore, Israel’s bilateral relationship with the Palestinians is inextricably linked to greater regional and global objectives. It must be especially cautious about using what is perceived to be excessive force, as this will draw worldwide notice.
Recent Developments
Following Israel’s clandestine military campaign within Gaza, a recent military confrontation between Israeli troops and resistance groups in Gaza ended in a physical combat as well as an exchange of missiles and artillery shells. Which affected the balance of power.
The confrontation led to the conclusion that Israel’s military options have been neutralized, but it is reasonable to suggest that it will not be able to impose a radical military solution for the conflict. Despite its technological superiority, Israel cannot impose its will on the Palestinians.
Another fundamental shift has occurred in Israel, where society is no longer the same as it was in the years leading up to 1967. It was still very much a “self-made” community suffering difficult economic conditions at the time. Israel is now mostly a consumer society, with a sizable middle class eager to live as comfortably as possible. The intensity of duty in the Israel Defense Forces and the perception of death in Israel have both changed as a result of this metamorphosis. The state’s founders have been replaced by a generation that is tired of being devoured by and dying in unending battle.
In addition, Egypt’s posture has shifted. This has contributed to a cease-fire and restrained Israel’s use of force in Gaza. Cairo has recognized the importance of Gaza to Egypt’s national security, and its intelligence agencies are confident that the Palestinians do not constitute a threat. Egypt’s domestic social and political challenges must be resolved by Egyptians.
