Compensation to the people who died due to covid is no doubt essential as we are a welfare state and its the responsibility of the government to assist and help people in such a grave situation like a pandemic. But we can not ignore that mere compensation for the death of a person who died due to covid although looks as a very lucrative and an easy solution to help citizens who suffered due to the pandemic but it may not be a good solution. We need to understand that providing compensation to everyone who died of covid may not be an economically viable option as it may put a huge financial burden on the government , who already have the burden of reviving the economy with limited budget. It is also important to note that if the amount of compensation is less than it might not even be helpful for the people it may only provide a very short term solution to the problem .
So instead of providing compensation to families of all people who died due to covid the primary focus should be on providing compensation to families who have lost their bread earners and it must be ensured that the amount may really help their family to live life with all basic amenities. The e-RUP which was launched by the government recently can also help in ensuring that benefits of the monetary transfers are utilised for the purpose that might add to skills or help in sustaining life of people whose sole bread earners are lost due to covid and they can be given assistance till they are not able to sustain themselves. These measures will also ensure that people are being given the right to life which our constitution guarantees to the people. India being a welfare state especially is responsible to ensure that it’s citizens at least have basic amenities to survive and live life as this pandemic is already harsh on the people irrespective of their economic or social status.
