On 1st June, Our PM decided to cancel the board exams of the students of standard 12th. There were many review meetings were conducted between higher education authorities, CBSE (Central board of secondary Education) and Prime minister of India. Students were happy and equally unpleasant about the decision. Some parents were happy because they were concerned about their son or daughter’s health. Flood of memes and jokes were made on this topic on various social media platforms like Twitter, Facebook and Instagram.
Following the footsteps of the CBSE, almost every state education board decided to cancel the 12th board exams. Meanwhile 10th CBSE and state board exams were cancelled many days before without any debate then why the cancellation of 12th exams was the hot topic.
Here’s why, Over 1 crore students approximately were supposed to give board exams from different educational boards. After the cancellation of exams, the fear and the handling of tough situations and preparation for any challenge is fading out. Students seems to be careless and sarcastic about it. There are 2 types of students, The topper and the mediocre one. As I was mediocre in my 12th class but I never thought that my exams should be cancelled or get postponed because I knew that exam was my only carrier counselor and I will get the clear idea in which field I want to go after the results.
Covid-19 cases started rising in the mid march around the country. This was the reason of concern for many parents many students. As far as the Government is concern they postponed the exams because it was the only option seems to be consider but those who were preparing for boards from last 2 years were seriously were pissed.
Now the covid-19 cases seems to decline the CBSE and other boards decided to make results on internal assessment of every student. Mathews Thomas, founder of the All India Educators Forum said that “Internal assessment of students can give a fair idea of the learning abilities and potential of students rather than performance in one examination”. Most students are concerned about the admission criteria. While those aspiring to study engineering, architecture and medicine have exams such as the JEE and NEET and other common entrance exams, students of arts and commerce, in particular, believe that a score based on internal assessment might impact their admission to colleges.
This type of situation is happening for the first time due to the pandemic. There is a proposal under consideration to allow students to take an offline exam at a later date if they are not satisfied with the score given by the school now.
