Corruption In India

Corruption is an age-old evil we are still dealing with in today’s day and time. Corruption has its roots in society and has become part of our lives. Corruption is the dishonest or fraudulent conduct by those in power, typically involving bribery. Corruption has reached every sector.

People have a got so used to seeing corruption everywhere that they have considered it to be a way of life. But such a situation where no one rises against corruption is a very bad sign for the development of a country. Corruption does not only stagger a nations growth but also the growth of the person indulging in it as ruins his moral conscience.

Corruption often dissuades foreign countries to invest in India. Excessive cases of corruption in India shows the country in a bad light. Corruption has a lot of disadvantages for the country. It discourages trade, investment, and friendly relations between countries. It is imperative that the developing nations should install strict measures that protect against corruption.

The government is taking efforts to curb this nuisance of corruption. With the help on sting operations and investigations many corrupt people are caught. It is difficult for the government track down each and every individual indulging in corruption. Corruption is widespread right from government offices, school, colleges, industries and corporates. Along with the government it is the duty of every citizen to standup and raise their voices against corruption.

It is very common to face difficulty while getting any work done in government offices. Situations like this brings up the term ‘Red Tapism’ meaning, these are burdensome rules, providing no added value. It includes unnecessary paperwork, obtaining licenses, having multiple people or committees approve a decision and various low-level rules that make conducting one’s affairs slower, more difficult. Red tapism happens not only in government sectors but also in private sectors. We all have experienced the struggle one has to go through to procure even the most basic documents like birth certificates, death certificates and documents.

Officers and employees do not want to go through the struggles of paper work and other formalities and therefore expect to be bribed for doing the work. It is been noticed that higher the level of red tapism higher is the level of corruption.

One of the best ways to call out or expose a corrupt officer or employee is whistle blowing, Whistleblowing is defined as an act of disclosing information by an employee or any concerned stakeholder about an illegal or unethical conduct within an organization.

There have been many cases where whistleblowers have faced the repercussions of exposing corrupt officials. These officials misuse their influence and power and threaten the whistleblowers.

In order to protect whistleblowers, the Whistleblower Protection Act, 2014 was enacted to enable any person to disclose to a Competent Authority, acts of corruption or willful misuse of power or discretion, or criminal offences by a public servant.

Corruption needs to be completely eradicated from society. The government along with the Judiciary and citizens need to join hands to together and implement more effective laws against corruption.
