The world politics and dynamics has changed substantially since the covid-19 outbreak in late 2019. Now, China is seen as more than a developing country. Even though it is doubted to be the origin of the sars-cov-2 strain of the Corona virus that has wreaked havoc, globally.
Prior to the pandemic, India’s relations with China have been deteriorating due to doklam standoff and tensions at the LAC. India seems to be missing on the major developments in the world. We don’t play a significant role in the west Asia. The Afghanistan issue of America withdrawing it’s troops also has no say from India. India – Iran relations have lost its warmth. India keeps on losing contracts in Afghanistan to build dams, roads because of delays on our end. And we lose onto our competitor i.e. China.
Due to Pakistan’s involvement in terrorist activities, our relationship with them has seldom been smooth. And China never fails to take advantage in investing in Pakistan. The pattern of China to trap countries in debt isn’t new. This tactic has been used in Maldives, Sri Lanka. No worthwhile diplomatic improvements can be seen with Nepal, Bangladesh, Myanmar. This stalemate on the political axis has affected economy too.
India had denied it’s acceptance of conditions of the regional grouping of RCEP. This could’ve been a better opportunity for trade amidst uncertainty. This technique of trade beyond politics has been adopted by Europe recently. Amidst global tensions with China over Wuhan lab strain, Europe has concluded the EU -China investment treaty. All this shall change the politics of West Asia and Europe.
Meanwhile, China contemplates a 25 year strategic engagement with Iran. And while this happens, India has lost its bid to farzan gas fields of Iran. Globally, a change of leadership of the superpower, USA, also has changed nothing. China’s yoke still is a threat.
India has the upheaval task of managing domestic policies with international treaties and minimizing losses to the economy. Aim is to restructure policies domestically so as to be synergetic with other groupings like RCEP, ASEAN. India has been a founding member of regional organisations like NAM (Non Alignment Movement) and SAARC(South Asia association of regional cooperation). But we’ve been losing ground in both these places. Both has become defunct.
India will serve as president of the coveted UN security council for the month of August in 2021. We must focus on modifying changes in the fields that have been traditionally in our focus. India must shape policies such that its weight and value in global politics is seen yet again.
In maintaining foreign relations, India follows the policy of PANCHSHEEL i.e. of non interference, non aggression among others. In our democratic history of almost 75 years, we have denied to be aligned to any superpower. The change of shifting powers has never and will never elude India from being the sovereign country that she is.
India has proved to be a dependable partner committed to strengthen bilateral ties based on mutual trust and cooperation. The global economy and politics is shifting and tilting at different axes. It’s time for India to apply the civilizational ethos that we posses. India is at the centre of geopolitics of the world and we must let prudent policies shape our future. The ideas that have their genesis in 2020 are going to shape ahead 2021. And India is ready to work hereupon.
