India has reported 54,069 fresh cases, 6.3% higher than yesterday. This is the second day that India’s COVID tally has been higher than that of the previous day’s. In the last 24 hours, 1,321 COVID deaths have been reported, taking the caseload and death toll to 30,082,778 and 391,981 respectively, according to the Union health ministry’s update at 8am
TAMIL NADU
Over 7,21,571 cases were booked against people who failed to wear masks across the State (Tamil Nadu).
The police have been enforcing the rules effectively since April 9.
According to the police, the cases reached 7.21 lakh on Monday, and fines were also collected from people who were found not wearing masks in public places.
Separately 22,460 cases were booked for violation of physical distancing norms and other COVID-19 protocols.
The Greater Chennai City Police said 25,675 cases were filed against people who were not wearing masks in the city limits.
A total fine of ₹48,37,600 was collected from violators and another 431 cases were booked for violation of physical distancing norms.
DELHI
To create an effective deterrent, the fine for not wearing a mask in public has been increased from ₹500 to ₹2,000 in the Capital.
The decision was taken at a meeting between Lieutenant Governor Anil Baijal and Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal on Thursday.
Mr. Kejriwal said: “When words do not do the task, imposing restrictions on them becomes necessary. Some people are defying COVID-19 protocols and exposing themselves and others to the risk of contracting the virus.”
UTTAR PRADESH
A fine of Rs 1,000 will be levied from people not wearing a mask or face cover in Uttar Pradesh and repeat offenders will be charged Rs 10,000, according to an official order. Amid spiralling cases of COVID-19 and high number of deaths, the Uttar Pradesh government amended the Epidemic Act, 2020, to impose the heavy fine.
According to an order issued by Additional Chief Secretary (Medical and Health) Amit Mohan Prasad, if a person is caught not wearing a mask, handkerchief, ‘gamchha’ or ‘dupatta’ in public places or outside the house, then a fine of Rs 1,000 will be levied.
MUMBAI
Citizens in Mumbai have paid Rs 44 crore as fines for not wearing masks during the Covid-19 pandemic. The fresh data has been shared by the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) at a time when Covid-19 cases are rapidly increasing in the city and in other parts of Maharashtra.
The latest data suggested that since the beginning of the pandemic last year, BMC along with the Mumbai Police and railway authorities collected a total sum of Rs 44 crore as fines from those who have been found not wearing a mask in public places.
The huge sum collected for not wearing masks indicates that people in the city are not abiding by Covid-19 rules despite repeated warnings from authorities. On March 20, the city’s agencies collected more than Rs 42 lakh as fines from citizens for not wearing masks.
