Cyber laws and cyber crimes

Cybercrimes involve traditional activities such as robbery, fraud, forgery, defamation and misery mentioned in the Indian penal code. Cyber law is a branch of the legal system that deals with legal issues surrounding the internet by providing protection to those that use it. This part of the overall legal system covers matters such as online privacy, freedom of expression, and censorship.

Various New opportunities for criminal activity have been created by technological progress, particularly in the commercial misuse of information technology such as: –

  • Unauthorized Access and Hacking.
  • Virus and Worm Attack.
  • Trojan Attack.
  • E-Mail and IRC related crimes- this also includes Email Spoofing, Email Bombing, Defamatory Emails, Email Frauds, IRC Related Email Spanning, Sending Threatening Emails

Impact of Cyber-crimes

  • Individuals today rely heavily on computers and the internet to transfer money and pay. The risk of online cash fraud is therefore extremely high. Some surveys have found that approximately 80 percent of the companies participating in the survey accepted financial losses due to cybercrimes. Not just individuals suffer financial losses due to cybercrimes.
  • People are also affected by their personal data leakage. Many social networking sites are still an open platform that anyone else can see, no matter how safe. In addition, hackers can also hack into your account and collect any information you want. Spamming and phishing are also harmful to humans.
  • Consumers lose their trust in such websites and apps with these financial losses and threats to personal data. The website or app has been stated as fraudulent and unsafe, even if the person who committed the crime is someone else.
  • The military now uses advanced IT technologies and networks in most countries. Although old, information warfare is used to propagate malware that can crashing the networks and propagating misinformation. Not just military personnel, these technologies are also used by terrorists and cyber criminals to interfere in the security networks of other countries and to gain information. Threats and warnings are also sent via computer systems.

Importance of cyber laws

In modern days, the need for and application of cyber laws became very pressing as the number of Internet users is growing faster. Cyber laws are crucial because-

  • In cyber law, the model of cyber society is presented and defined and cyber properties are upheld.
  • The increasing popularity of payment apps and sites is making on-line transactions more and more easy and efficient for consumers. ‘Cashless India’ government scheme has also become more popular and a large number of Online Transactions have resulted.
  • The main mode of communication is e-mail, SMS, messaging applications and social networking sites.
  • Companies rely heavily on their computer networks to safeguard their data.
  • In non-cyber crimes, computers and networks also help. As with most data, computers and mobile phones are stored these days. The evidence gathered from them can contribute to different crimes, such as abduction, terrorist attacks, counterfeit currencies, tax avoidance and so on.
  • In modern times, digital contracts also become popular; cyber law helps protect the rights of these digital contracts that are legally enforceable.

The Internet has a rapidly growing role and use around the world. However, cyber criminals are also more comfortable in having use of any data and information, which people deliberately and unintentionally offer on the internet and otherwise. It is also more convenient for consumers, because everything can be done at home. So, in conjunction with proper cybercrime protection and prevention legislation, we need to raise awareness about cybercrimes and inform the public.
