The coronavirus Covid-19 pandemic is the defining global health crisis of our time and the greatest challenge we have faced since World War II. The pandemic is moving like a wave- and creating fear everywhere, but the health is not only the darker side of society, some other problems are coming along with this and our society is badly affected by it. In a bunch of crises and problems, one of the biggest problems our society is facing is that of Cybercrime. The speaker explains about the Routine Activity Theory i.e. there’s a motivated offender who do crime where there’s an absence of guardian or where’s a suitable target i.e. what is the value of the target and what his/her ability to retaliate. This webinar also explains the cyber crime in Situational context. There’s already fear, panic and lockdown because of pandemic and with increase in cyber crime the fear and panic has increased so much. This crime has also increased because now people work from home which decrease every chance of crime physically and with the increase use of cyberspace like B2B, B2C, G2C the cyber crime increased to different extent. With increase in cybercrime the cyber crime trends has also increased like phishing, information stealing Trojans, ransom ware attacks, target teleworkers etc. Cyber crime has also been discussed from the international context like fake versions of fund collection websites. This webinar also explains how to set a strong password so that it can reduce the chance of cyber crime. Even though it is next to impossible to decrease the risk of being attacked but we can use some measures to keep ourselves safe.

There’s so much increase in phishing like there’s impersonation of WHO and other organisational websites which mislead the person by exactly looking like the original website. Then there’s fake online pharmacies which is just opened for the money and fake online shops like there’s a fake online shop which shows the pictures of wine shop in Guhwati. During the coronavirus pandemic everyone is maintaining social distancing as well as contactless transactions. Therefore digital transactions are becoming so popular such as payment to the shopkeeper, while purchasing vegetables and fruits, payments of electricity, bills of phone and water Etc. and many such types of payments can be done through digital payment. Recently there’s one person who did some online payment through his credit card and on the next day of his payment he received a message from the appropriate bank that there has been deduction of some amount from his credit card however the shocking news was that he did not do that transaction. That means firstly deduction of Rs. 1 and secondly Rs.8000/- without the consent of the cardholder. No OTP, no password was asked by the bank and in few second frauds of Rs. 8000 had been done on the Internet. My friend is a victim of online transaction fraud. Hence, Although the risk of being attacked will remain, some mitigation measures may help users and employers. For the users, it is recommended to be very vigilant about phishing emails and websites, practice good cyber hygiene, use only trusted Wi-Fi networks, and consider adopting a password manager to help to avoid using the same password for multiple websites. Finally, it is recommendable that they provide employees with appropriate courses to enhance their cyber-security knowledge.
