Delhi, a city and union territory is the national capital of India. The city homes a population of over 25 million, becoming the second most populated city in the world. The capital is of great importance to the nation, historically and politically.
Being one of the oldest cities of the world, Delhi has been a prime location for many kingdoms and empires. The city is also assumed to be the mythical city of Indraprastha, the capital of the Pandavas in Mahabharat. Throughout India’s history, Delhi has been the site of multiple architectural masterpieces.
The Red Fort built by Shah Jahan took over 10 years to be the marvelous structure that stands in the heart of the city. This red sandstone monument is known for its Mughal architecture and is a UNESCO World Heritage site. India Gate, the iconic landmark is one of the if not the most well-known architectural piece of Delhi. Thousands of names of Indian soldiers had been inscribed on the memorial who lost their lives during the country’s independence. The Qutub Minar, Humayun’s Tomb and Jantar Mantar are other well-known monuments of the city.
The climate of Delhi fluctuates throughout the year, ranging from around 5 degree Celsius during the dry winter months to over 40 degrees Celsius in the scorching summers. The monsoon winds bring non uniform rainfall to the country from the month of June and leave the nation by the end of September. One of the major problems associated with the climate of the national capital is the hazardous air quality which prevails over the city. The government is trying to control the worsening condition by promoting the use of CNG and restricting the use of firecrackers in the city.
The Delhi Metro has become on of the most favored means of public transport for the city population as it spreads across the capital and beyond, and is still expanding.
The city has many religions, the prevalent being Hinduism, followed by Islam, Sikhism, Christianity and Buddhism. The capital also has multiple language speakers, the majority speaking Hindi followed by Punjabi and Urdu.
The culture of Delhi is as diverse as it can get, being influenced by the historical events and foreign cultures. The national capital has exceptional importance in the celebration of the national events and holidays like Gandhi Jayanti, Independence Day and Republic Day. Religious festivals like Diwali, Raksha Bandhan, Holi, Eid-ul-Fitr, Moharram, and Buddha Jayanti are celebrated all across the city. Delhi also hosts multiple events like The International Book Fair, The India International Trade Fair and Comic Con which attracts thousands of residents from the city.
It is well known that the cuisine and street food of Delhi is mouthwateringly delicious and true representation of India’s taste buds. The classic dishes include butter chicken, dal makhani, shahi paneer, aloo chaat, dahi bhalla, kachori, gol gappe, etc. Most of the street food is easily accessible throughout the city in form of small food stalls as well as in expensive restaurants. A trend of dining at local dhabas is popular among the residents.
Modern shopping hubs are scattered throughout the city. Connaught place, Chandni Chowk, Sarojini Nagar, Khan Market and Dilli Haat are some of the major retail markets in Delhi. Major shopping malls include Select Citywalk, Pacific Mall, DLF Promenade, DLF Emporio, Metro walk and Ansal Plaza.
The delights of Delhi have their ups and downs but are endless.
