DISASTER

Disaster is a sudden hazardous change in the environment which causes great destruction to that area as well as the surrounding area which is being affected by the disaster. World Health Organization has defined disaster as any sudden occurrence of the events that cause damage, ecological disruption, loss of human life, deterioration of health and health services, on a scale sufficient to warrant an extraordinary response from outside the affected community or area. The damage caused by a disaster is limitless. It varies according to the geographical location. At some areas it may cause extreme damage and at other areas it may not cause that much. Disaster causes loss of life, economic loss, infrastructural loss etc. Disasters are unpredictable most of the times. It is very important to be prepared in advance so that there is no much loss.

Disasters have a lot of consequences. The destruction and losses depend upon the intensity of the calamity. It causes loss of life and property and not only human life but there is loss of animal life too. Disaster leads to a loss of agriculture. It destroys the whole ecological balance. Disasters are inevitable in nature.

Types of Disasters

There are two types of disasters:

1. Natural Disasters

2. Manmade Disasters

 Natural Disasters

Natural Disasters are those disasters which are unpredictable in nature. The destruction caused by natural disasters depends upon the intensity as well as upon the geographical area. Tsunami, hurricanes, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions are some of the natural disasters. Climatic change is one of the main causes of these disasters. There are movements inside the Earth which is also a reason for natural disasters. Natural Disasters cannot be avoided but necessary measures can be taken to lessen the losses. Natural Disaster are also classified into two categories. One is Major Natural Disaster which includes events like cyclone, hurricanes, draught, high-intensity earthquakes etc. Another type is Minor Natural Disaster which includes heat wave, thunderstorms, low intensity earthquakes, minor landslides etc.

Man-made Disasters

Disasters which are caused because of human activity are called Man-made Disaster. Most of the man-made disaster occurs due to human negligence. Man-made disaster can be major as well minor. Some of them can be controlled while some of these disasters can be out of human control. Man-made Disaster are also classified into two categories. They are Major Man-made Disaster and Minor Man-made Disaster. Major man-made disasters include forest fires, nuclear attacks, industrial accidents like Bhopal gas tragedy etc. Minor man-made disasters include road accidents, food poisoning, looting etc.

Disasters can’t be prevented as they are inevitable, but the loses can be minimized by taking precautions. Disaster Management requires proper planning and funding. Disasters are not always unpredictable. Landslides occurs in areas where there is high rainfall, floods take place in valleys, drought in areas where there is low rainfall. These disasters are somewhere predictable and by having proper planning and by making necessary arrangements the impacts of these disaster can lessen. The effects of disasters can be prevented by early warnings and proper preparation. The aim of Disaster Management is to reduce the impact of the disaster. Disaster management forces come into action as soon as a disaster strikes and help out in the relief, rescue and rehabilitation process. Trained individuals perform in the rescue operations during the disaster. They not only help at the time of disaster but also helps the people to come back to their normal life.

Conclusion

Disasters are unavoidable but its effectiveness can be reduced and the damages caused by the disasters can be reduced and the only way is to be prepared all the time as disasters are unpredictable and can happen anytime anywhere.
