An empty mind is devil’s abode’ we are all aware with this phrase. And when it comes to pandemic, it’s not just about the medical phenomenon but it also affects the individual and the society at a psychological level which gives rise to anxiety, stress and somewhere depression. It’s a frightening time. We are all stuck in a worldwide pandemic, and in a time of massive upheaval. There are so many things outside our control like for how long we are stuck , do we ever again can go back to our universities, work place including the constant irritation and stress of being at home without being productive and doing nothing. Lockdown is not a normal situation.
It can give rise to tensions, anxiety and can aggravate any underlying mental ailments and can be very stressful. Quarantine and self-isolation put a negative impact on one’s mental health. The people have lost their jobs/earnings due to this lockdown. They are finding it difficult to sustain their family which is causing anxiety and stress and a feeling of helplessness resulting into domestic violence. Domestic abuse is already a problem in a relationship, but the coronavirus pandemic is making it worse. A person who is already abusive may use this situation to exert more control over a partner and the otherwise passive are getting indulged in it with the stay at home situations. There is an increase in stress as a result of the pandemic. Schools are closed, universities, offices are closed so everyone is at home. Families may feel crowded, frustrated that they can’t escape one another. At the same time they are isolated from their friends and can no longer go out to reduce their stress or enjoy in order to lighten up their mood. Financial stress can also be a factor, as people who worked as daily wage earners are even finding it very difficult to feed their families on a regular basis.
Adding to this pandemic, stay at home orders by government, part time curfews and quarantine rules, some families are likely to encounter more arguing and with all these added stress and anxiety put a great chance of domestic violence to take place between partners also if the household members are consuming more alcohol than usual to reduce stress, they might be at a higher risk for acting out and causing physical harm to family members.
Also, couples engaged in jobs had no time to find faults with each other as they meet only in evenings and were occupied in their work and were busy and were maintaining their work and personal life peacefully but now as they have enough time to show differences and egoistic attitude over small issues which result into domestic violence. All these together influence a person’s mind, where tempers can fly high even on small matters. This can lead to disagreements and arguments between the partners or family members and according to most of the experts even yelling and shouting is termed under domestic violence.
The only thing that can be done in the time of this pandemic to stop such violence is to be emotionally available for each other, talking out differences and keeping ourselves engaged in some regular activities or practices which will divert our mind from stress and tension.
Also, letting your work life take over your personal life can have massive impact on your mental health so we need to establish clear boundaries between our working life and private life.
Physically disconnecting from your workspace and allowing yourself the time to relax will benefit your stress levels and help you to be more productive and keep you out of small arguments. Communicate well with your partners about all the odds and evens and taking out time with this stressful situation to make them feel better and doing stuffs that can actually cancel out the differences.
