Despite the advancement in technology, there is still a plethora of people who don’t have access to proper internet facilities. The imposition of lockdown in the country due to the ongoing pandemic has made schools resort to online means for education. Everybody doesn’t have access to high-speed internet and wifi, data pack is limited, not everybody has access to computer or laptop These vary not only on a geographical basis but also income and computer literacy play a crucial role in this. Such disparities are further leading to the isolation of kids from the world. Closing down of schools due to pandemic forced students belonging to marginalized sections to drop out of schools. With the introduction of schemes like mid-day meal, surety of one-time meals resulted in an increase in enrollment in the schools but now since schools have shut down people from marginalized sections of society don’t have access to proper food in such a case online education seems a far fetched dream.
A model was adopted by Kerala under which classes were provided through cable television which doesn’t require internet. Not only this they made few centers where television was set up and classes took place following all the social distancing norms. With this Kerela has set up as an example for other states to follow.
Moving forward another challenge is the access to education to females in society. Even though we live in the 21st-century patriarchy persists which results in less access to educational resources for female children as compared to others. They are put to household chores as a result of which their education has come to a halt. It is also believed that females might fall prey to harassment on the internet and can also act as a distraction from household work as a result of which they are not provided with sufficient resources necessary for being a part of online education. In government schools, females had access to sanitary napkins for free but now they are forced to resort to traditional methods which again results in a lack of hygiene which will affect them both mentally and physically. It will result in the widening of the gender gap in the country.
Claims like a ton of computerized content have been created and communicated to help youngsters keep on learning, there is restricted proof on the degree to which this substance is arriving at kids; regardless of whether they are drawing in with it; and the effect it is having on their cooperation and learning. Not only these students are facing difficulties in completing school homework and projects due to a lack of guidance. Parents are not educated enough to help their kids and affording private tuitions has become difficult.
There is a need for interference of government bodies to ensure that no child suffers due to the lack of resources. There is an urgent need to provide access to the internet in remote areas as lockdown continues to exist. Free access to laptops, computers should be provided to children. Not only the government but private individuals should also help kids living in the nearby locality with services such as voluntary teaching programs, etc.
