Election is the main vehicle through which modern democracy moves. It is a contest between candidates in a electoral constituency to win the election with the majority of votes.
For election, the entire country is divided into fixed electoral areas with the body of registered voters. These areas are called constituencies. Five or six assembly are grouped together to make a permanent constituency. Efforts are made to keep the size of all the constituencies equal as far as possible. Constituencies equal as far as possible. Some constituencies are reserved for scheduled castes or tribes in which only candidates from ST or SC can contest and there is no general candidate. The election was held in nine phases, from 7 April to 12 May 2014 spread over 36 days to vote members of parliament to all 543 parliament constituencies of India. This was the largest election in India’s history.
Electoral population in 2014 election was 814.5 million, making it the largest ever election in the world [ECI] .
