BACKGROUND
TheWorld Environment Day is one of the Greatest events organized by the United Nations to generate awareness annually and the significance of nature and greenery. As United Nations Assembly established World Environment Day on 5th June in 1972, which was the first day of the Stockholm Conference on the human environment.
In the year 1974, it was celebrated with the theme of ‘Only One Earth’. Since then, various host countries have been celebrating it, and the idea for rotating the centre of these activities started. World Environment Day was first observed in 1974 in the United Nations.
- CURRENT ISSUE
As plastic has many valuable uses as well as they have become addicted and part of single-use or disposable plastic with many environmental consequences. Around the world, one million plastic drinking bottles are purchased every single minute, while 5 trillion single use or one time use plastic bags are used worldwide every single year. In total, half of all plastic produced is designed to be used only once it is commenced and then thrown away. Plastic waste is now so omnipresent in natural environment that scientists have even suggested it could serve as a geological indicator researcher estimates that more than 8.3 billion tonnes of non-reusable plastic were been produced since the early 1950s. About 60% of that plastic has ended up in either a landfill or the natural environment causing drastic natural disaster impact natural life and resources around the world.
We’re seeing some other worrying trends. Since the 1950s, the rate of plastic production has grown faster than that of any other material similar to it. We’ve also seen a shift away from the production of durable plastic towards plastics that are meant to be thrown away after a single use. More than 98% of plastics are produced from chemicals derived from oil, natural gas and coal all of which are dirty and non-renewable resources only 2% from plastic is recyclable. If current trends continue, by 2050 the plastic industry could account for 20% of the world’s total oil consumption for manufacturing non reusable plastic.
Plastic waste as contaminates all major ecosystems on the planet, with concern increasing about its potential impacts on wildlife and human health, as smaller and more widespread plastic particles are identified in both the natural and built environment. For decades, researchers and scientists have documented plastic debris in the ocean. Marine sources of ocean pollutant and were addressed in the late 1970s and 1980s before the focus turned to inland as the purported, yet poorly substantiated, source of 80% of marine debris. The estimate the amount of inadequately managed plastic waste generated within 50 km of the coastline that entered the global of ocean plastic pollution, spurring responses by non governmental organizations, policy-makers, and the plastics and consumer products industries.
- CONCLUSION
Though plastic consumption is bit useful in modern civilisation and provides us with various useful articles, it serves as a serious threat to our environment and natural life around us including human beings so, we should try our level best to reduce, reuse and recycle plastic as whenever and wherever it possible to reduce the level of environment pollution caused by plastics is a nutshell, every kind of pollution leaves a huge negative impact towards our environment, human lives, animals etc. We, as a responsible citizen, must take steps forward for a better tomorrow. We must join hands to take various initiatives and fight against this problem to save our environment for a better world.
