2020 has been a challenging year and so is 2021. I am going to finish my second year this month. All my friends are working or have been working for a long time but nobody told me the challenges we face and its harder to get internships or jobs out there, especially for a law aspirant.
Every job application I see on LinkedIn requires post qualification experience (PQE) of more that 2-7 years. I haven’t even graduated and it literally means that I should be interning while studying. Covid has been quite a challenge for a lot of us, leaving us with a scarcity of jobs or internships available. People are forced to work online and virtual internships that we all are doing now raises a particular question: does the experience give you the same benefits as working in an office? With the global spread of COVID-19 disrupting companies, changing travel plans, and forcing thousands to work remotely online, what kind of work experience is available this year?
I learned and read a lot while last year which also included new skills, this upgraded my education. Research on the top skills that employers look for on resumes, such as problem-solving and project management skills, and start learning. With online internship, it is easier to work from home or wherever we choose to do the work, despite the geographical boundaries. It has helped me broaden my perspective on various topics around the world.
As we start our career, we should broaden your prospects. The coronavirus pandemic has demonstrated how fast the best and well-crafted plans can change. Therefore, expand your thinking and the type of industries you would want to work for. If your focus was on becoming a laboratory researcher in a university lab that is no longer offering internships, consider diverting to scientific writing or pharmaceuticals. If you were applying for internship positions at consulting firms, you might reconsider applying to non-profits or start-ups. The key to landing an internship position at this time of crisis is to keep brainstorming and look for alternative directions.
I have always been the kind of person who has been enthusiastic in learning new things and it has been a rewarding experience in writing legal articles. I am grateful for Aishwarya Sandeep ma’am for being so considerate and adaptable in not only giving input on legal topics but having flexibility in writing content which talks about day to day current issues as well. She encourages us to Once in a week, there is a session held by her to teach us what can be used in practical day to day life regarding law. It is a boon for a lot of interns who get to work and experience.
Even though unemployment has recorded the highest levels due to social distancing and business closures, graduates and soon-to-be graduates can secure an internship if they get a little creative. Use this time to network and know people in different career fields.
Special thanks to Adv. Aishwarya Sandeep for giving me a chance and changing my perspective in ample number of topics and for making me a better attorney in future.
Aishwarya Says:
I have always been against Glorifying Over Work and therefore, in the year 2021, I have decided to launch this campaign “Balancing Life”and talk about this wrong practice, that we have been following since last few years. I will be talking to and interviewing around 1 lakh people in the coming 2021 and publish their interview regarding their opinion on glamourising Over Work.
