The idea of not going to college and studying at home has always sounded invigorating, until it is implemented with the right administration. It is hard to go to classes from home while investing energy with family as contrast with attending classes in person at a college. However, e-learning is not a new concept, and it is gaining popularity as a result of the COVID-19 Pandemic. It is a fundamental advance which has been taken by the schooling office to change over the training into a virtual mode while the term of lockdown.
According to UNESCO, 1.37 billion students in 138 countries have been affected by school and university closures as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. Almost 60.2 million school and college professors are unable to conduct classes offline since the entire country is under lockdown, e-learning is the only choice left. University professors are creating accounts on online video conferencing services such as Zoom, Skype, and Google Meet to draw in with their studies.
Online education has made it possible to take on-demand lectures from anywhere at any time using any digital device, but it has also made education a new challenge for administrators and students. Today, digital education joins customary social standards, for example, understanding materials and course books with programming norms, for example, new media and pdfs. There are a few advantages to attending online classes. The capacity to integrate learning into an already hectic schedule is one of the most enticing characteristics of online programmes.
The ability to keep a career while pursuing school will be aided by the flexibility. Students who take online classes are getting more opportunities to complete a course within the time frame set by their educators. This will enable them to invest more energy with their family without forfeiting that time on finishing the work. It also gives you the opportunity of working online at the same time.
One of the biggest advantages of online class is that it seems less expensive than offline education because the costs of attending college is one the main reasons why students delay in enrolling in a programme. Furthermore, they can save money on travel costs by taking online classes, and it additionally empower the alternative to bring in cash by doing any work.
Apart from the advantages, the difficulties of e-learning are multifaceted. It is time that we Indians, as a general public, comprehend the domains of online education – in India, for India.
This new educational paradigm may fail badly in a country like India, where internet access is limited. As a result, the Internet may emerge as a key concern that jeopardises e-learning. The government has been making a concerted effort to increase internet connectivity in every business over the past two decades. However, India continues to suffer internet problems. The Niti Aayog recognised the internet’s quality and reliability as a critical obstacle in its study, “Strategy for New India@75.” There are approximately 55,000 localities in the country that are not covered by a mobile network. The thought of online classes has become a difficulty for those students who have gone home during the crisis. Students who reside in metropolitan areas are more likely to have access to the internet than those who live in rural locations.
While some teachers and students believe that students will not be promoted to the next grade unless they attend a few offline classes, others believe that they will need to change the nature of assignments and online classes to ensure that students learn the core concepts and can be promoted even if they do not attend offline classes. Many students in numerous institutions have not had the option to get to online classes because they lack the appropriate technology or reliable internet access.
Online education has an impact on the mental well-being of students, parents, and even professors. For people who already have mental health problems, it’s probable that things will get worse. Consider what it would be like for a child to spend hours every day in front of Zoom, with no social interaction or opportunities to play with their peers. It includes not only the time kids spend in virtual school, but also the time they spend on digital homework. Furthermore, because there are no physical activities available to them, most children spend their days addicted to their screens, playing video games or watching cartoons. Guardians are becoming more involved in their children’s education and acting like their mentors. Teachers and professors are working longer hours and are under pressure to provide high-quality instruction without having to meet with students in person.
Online education opens up a world of possibilities for both students and teachers. However, it has the potential to exacerbate gaps in India’s socioeconomic fabric. All of our online education policies and interventions should try to be inclusive. India will be shown the route forward through good vision, earnest efforts, and time. For the benefit of all student’s futures, the education authorities have chosen this option.
