The government’s Proposal and the fears of the Protestors.
The Union government recently concluded its 10th sitting with the protesting farm unions. They have come up with the proposal to suspend the farm laws for 18 months or 1.5 years.
This article shall in brief try to speculate a justification of why such a step was taken. For the outsiders i.e. the private citizens who are not directly not involved in this conversation, this rejection of the government’s proposal may seem arrogant and uncompromising. This article shall speculate as to why such stubbornness on part of the protestors is justified.
The farming Unions say they stand firm on their ground of the full repealing of the three fame laws, and a legislature guaranteeing of MSP for all farmers in the country. The All India Kisan Sangharsh Coordination Committee (AIKSCC) said that a press conference detailing why the farmers’ unions have rejected this proposal will be held on Friday, January 22.[1]
This decision has come just before the Union of farmers and the Union Government was supposed to meet for it’s 11th round of conference.[2] It has been announced that, the Argiculture minister of the Union government, Naredra Singh Tomar shall lead this delegation.[3]
It is also being speculated that the farmers will take out a tractor march on republic day as sign of escalating protests inside the capital. In a meeting with Delhi police the protesting farmers reiterated their plan to do the same on the outer ring road. It was observed that several farm unions actually did a rehearsal of such a protest that had more than 15000 tractors taking parts coming from 16 districts all acros the state. This was pointed out by the Bhatiya Kisan Union state secretary Sukhdev Singh
Tens of thousands of farmers from Punjab, Haryana, and other neighboring states have joined the movement pushing for repealing the laws, it is not far fetched idea that such a mass movement shall be difficult to build one and a half year from now when the suspension of the laws in question shall come to an end and thus the insecurity of the farmers are being projected in their unmoving position of repealing the laws.
The government in its haste in bringing agrarian reform has pushed the slow-moving industry and it’s employees in a very insecure and fearful position. Please note this is not a discussion on the merits of the laws themselves, but an explanation of the fallout that is directly the result of the same.
Thus, it can be speculated without making a far fetched assumption that the protestors want to use the spontaneous movement against the farm laws to lead to a permanent solution rather than just forcing the government of the day to postpone the implementation of the laws.
We therefore will not be wrong to assume that what we as private citizens see as irrational and stubbornness of the farmers so protesting is plain fear and insecurity and the lack of confidence on part of the people so protesting to be able to build a movement of this scale again if nothing is resolved by the time suspension in the farm laws are lifted.
