United Nations Security Council, as the name suggests is a part and an important functioning organ of United nations. It was established along with the establishment if united nations with the main objective set as to maintain peace and order in the contemporary world solve issues between nations along with other problems. Its objectives and ideologies were based on and inspired by the lessons learnt from the failure of its ancestry peace keeping body league of nations, which failed to prevent world war II along with many other major conflicts.

Under United nations charter, the primary functions and powers of security council include maintenance of international peace and security in conformity with the United Nations’ ideals and goals, to look into any dispute or scenario that could cause international strife, to devise proposals for the development of armament regulation systems, to decide whether or not there is a threat to the peace or an act of aggression, and to make recommendations on how to respond, to encourage members to adopt economic fines and other non-violent tactics to deter or avoid hostility, to recommend the appointment of the Secretary-General to the General Assembly, and to elect the Judges of the International Court of Justice alongside the Assembly.

To perform these functions, security council has a range of tools and at its disposal. When confronted with a possibility of conflict, the Council’s initial response is to advise the parties to achieve an agreement by peaceful means. The Council may appoint special representatives, or request that the UN Secretary General appoint them, to support and guide efforts toward conflict settlement. In the event of a war, the Council may issue ceasefire orders, send in UN peacekeeping forces, or deploy enforcement measures such as sanctions. The Council, with or without the permission of national governments, can take steps to safeguard people caught up in the conflict, such as authorizing humanitarian organizations to cross national boundaries. The Council has the authority to order governments to limit their stockpiles of particular weapons or to disarm, for example, through nuclear non-proliferation and chemical weapons annihilation.

Review of UN peacekeeping operations, consultations on individual nation circumstances, and monitoring the implementation of UN sanctions regimes through the work of the Council’s sanctions committees are among the Council’s daily functions. It can be said that not only in times of conflict and war but even in times of peace the council works and strives along with the cooperation of its members to maintain the tranquility.
