‘’To all the little girls who are watching this, never doubt that you are valuable and powerful , and deserving of every chance and opportunity in the world to pursue and achieve your own dreams. ’’ – Hillary Clinton
Many of you might take a look in this just because it titled ‘Gender Equality’ where as if it was ‘Feminism’ then I doubt the number of readers. Our present society gave an image that feminism is man hating or ruling over men. Whereas no one realizes that its simple meaning is equality. People say I stand for equality but they refuse to say ,’Yes I am a Feminist’.
Society as whole cannot be changed and each mindset differs and changing them is not possible . But we definitely can change small things from our home. Treating your boy and girl child equally . Making them believe that respect is what matters and it is not just to a particular gender but to every kind. From giving education to choosing their spouse every individual must be given freedom. Not just because of any gender but because they carry individuality .
We have seen a patriarchal society ,where if you are a girl child then you are supposed to eat less, not allowed to go out of your choice , well there isn’t any choice at all ,just obey elders because you are a girl ,one day you will go to another house and you be a slave obeying them so learn those from your house. At the same time, boys can sleep how long they want , doesn’t have to care anything about the family ,hang out with friends and parents are not ready to know who are his friends so on.
When we build a wrong mindset to our kids ,that gives a wrong impact on a huge society. Teach our kids that Learning to cook is not because you belong to a particular gender but it is a survival skill that you need to know. Being neat and tidy is for your own good and it’s not on any gender’s responsibility . Stating that ,’ she is a girl so by restricting her we are only trying to protect her .’ Well there is difference between protecting and restricting .Then Why don’t you protect you boy child in that particular way ?
No gender is above anyone . We all are human and we got our own differences physically but that doesn’t have to make difference in treating a person . Give them opportunity to achieve certain dreams in their life . Make a note that just like you and me every person deserves to be treated equally no matter which gender they belong to .after all its not them who choose the Gender.
Hope majority of the people know who is Nangeli. She belonged to a Ezhava community who lived in the 19th centuary . She is a well known feminist who belonged to those era. The voice she raised was for the right to freely cover their breasts. At those times if a girl get to cover her breasts need to pay tax if she belonged to this Ezhava community . Well for that she protested by cuttting off her breast and died of it. Just because of such a strong movement the ruler had to get down that rule .
Yes , that is something you call it to be a feminism because she raised her voice to be treated equally , just because they belonged to such a community doesn’t make them less value. If a woman comes up saying that she want to do certain job or want to study certain things just because of her gender that shouldn’t be neglected. When they say all should be treated equally that means all equals to be treated equally , isn’t that our constitution provides us according to Article 14. When stating that equals to be treated equally that means there are differences between men and women . There are mental and physical aspects which differ them .
If suppose a man states that a female is not suppose to pay equally for the job done same as men then there inequality stricks , and definitely women is not asking to get the muscle power job for all females just because men are doing them . Obviously that’s not the idea but if she is capable of doing them then she should be given opportunity for it. Just like a man got his dreams even woman do have them. Choosing her career is her choice, when to get married is her choice, with whom she should live is her choice . Respect every individuals choices and it is never good to give less value to their decisions.
” Don’t you have shame to cry like a girl, boys never cry , don’t be a shame to the whole community ,stop doing that dirty work”. If you are a boy then you might have gone through such a statement atleast once in your life during childhood. From childhood boys never had the freedom to cry out ,just because he is a boy. They made those innocent hearts believe by saying that crying shows weakness nor crying are only meant for girls. How foolish was to give such statements and made us believe them. Anger is a sign of power and being strong ,and if he cries he is a weak personality.
After all these were just emotions which got nothing to treat with gender. Whether boy or girl both got these emotions. How can someone stop them from expressing their pain and restricting them just because they belong to a gender. Being a boy or a man must require great strength to live in this society like this. All their worries and pain is been hold on, which actually is one of the reason of depressions and suicides. If they were treated without giving much pressure to them then we do can decrease these suicidal attempts. For that Gender Equality is a must. Just because they belong to a gender things should not control them. Give them the freedom to breathe fresh air. Let them be free from restrictional approaches from society. Let them be given the rights to do for what they want and express themselves the way they feel. And if you think those are been violated then raise your voice against them.’ IF NOT ME, WHO? IF NOT NOW, WHEN? ‘ Remember this and and let us stand together with a helping hand for one another.
“It is the time that we all see gender as a spectrum instead of two sets of opposing ideals.” – Emma Watson
