Former Minneapolis Police Officer Derek Chauvin was sentenced to 22.5 years in prison for the murder of George Floyd, whose dying sigh below Chauvin’s knee sparked the biggest anti-racial outcry in America in generations.
The sentence, which did not reach the 30 years requested by prosecutors, came after Chauvin broke more than a year of silence in court to offer his condolences to the Floyd family and hope that more information will be released. published which will ultimately give them “a little peace.” of mind. ”If he behaves well, Chauvin, 45, could be paroled after serving two-thirds of his sentence, or around 15 years.
In imposing the sentence, Judge Peter Cahill went beyond the 12.5-year prison sentence required by state directives, citing “your breach of trust and authority as well as the particular cruelty” shown to Floyd.
Chauvin was immediately returned to prison. As with the April verdicts, he showed little emotion when the judge announced the verdict. His eyes quickly roamed the courtroom, his Covid-19 mask covering most of his face.
The dismissed white officer was convicted of accidental second degree murder, third degree murder and second degree manslaughter for keeping his knee against Floyd’s neck for up to 9 1/2 minutes while that the 46-year-old black panted that it was that he couldn’t breathe and went limp on May 25, 2020.
Video by a witness to Floyd’s arrest on suspicion of selling a fake $ 20 bill at a corner store sparked protests around the world and led to isolated violence in Minneapolis and beyond.
Chauvin, who did not testify at his trial, took off his mask on Friday and turned to the Floyd family. He spoke only briefly about what he called “certain additional legal issues,” an obvious reference to the federal citizenship lawsuit he still faces.
Floyd’s family members have spoken out and expressed their grief over his death. They demanded the maximum penalty.
Prosecutor Matthew Frank urged the judge to violate sentencing guidelines and give Chauvin 30 years in prison, saying “tortured is the right word” for what the officer did to Floyd.
Chauvin’s mother, Carolyn Pawlenty, appeared in court to beg pardon for her son and said his reputation had been wrongly reduced to that of “an aggressive, heartless and callous person” and a racist.
