Health care is an important aspect for any country’s development. A good health care system can help the progress of a country in many ways. Health is wealth is a common proverb, which is true because if the citizens are healthy, they will be able to contribute more towards the nation.
Health care is defined as, the set of services provided by a country or an organization for the treatment of the physically and the mentally ill
India is a highly populated country because of which it becomes difficult for the government to cater to each and every individual’s need. There has been a lot of efforts from the governments side but there is still a lot of room for improvement.
Urban areas are equipped with health care to some extent but it’s the rural areas that are lacking behind when it comes to health care.
Primary health centers are the cornerstones of the rural health care system. These facilities are part of a tiered health care system that funnels more difficult cases into urban hospitals while attempting to provide routine medical care to the vast majority in the countryside. Primary health centers and sub-centers rely on trained paramedics to meet most of their needs.
Primary health care centers set up in rural areas provide minimal services. To avail advanced health services, people from the rural areas need to come to the city. Health care centers in rural areas are often under staffed and lack basic facilities.
The health care system in India is primarily administered by the states. India’s Constitution tasks each state with providing health care for its people. In order to address lack of medical coverage in rural areas, the national government launched the National Rural Health Mission in 2005. This mission focuses resources on rural areas and poor states which have weak health services in the hope of improving health care in India’s poorest regions.
State governments provide healthcare services and health education, while the central government offers administrative and technical services.
Lack of adequate coverage by the health care system in India means that many Indians turn to private healthcare providers. Private health care providers are very expensive and poor people from rural areas cannot afford these services. Most of the times they die because of the they cannot arrange for funds at the right time for the required treatments.
Middle class families also face similar problems of high costs in private hospitals. They are compensated by the insurance companies but usually pay a lot of out-of-pocket expenses which is not covered by the insurance companies.
The government in 2018 announced the Ayushman Bharat PM-JAY health care scheme which means, Free treatment available at all public and empaneled private hospitals in times of need. Covers secondary and tertiary care hospitalization. 1,350 medical packages covering surgery, medical and day care treatments, cost of medicines and diagnostics. All pre-existing diseases covered.
India is on path to a better health care system but often falls short in its implementation. It’s time that both the citizens and the government of India understands the importance of an effective health care system and works towards achieving it.
