COVID-19 has unexpectedly turned the lives of a lot of people. Now we cannot travel from one city or country to another like we used to earlier. This pandemic has made everyone’s life extremely difficult and challenging. Aviation industry is one of the industries which if facing a lot of financial challenges due to the pandemic. More than 4,00,000 airline workers have been fired, or told they may lose their jobs due to the coronavirus, according to Bloomberg calculations, also, Air India has withdrawn job offers for around 180 trainee cabin crew members amid the economic slowdown in the Indian aviation sector due to the coronavirus pandemic. The virus is said to be transmitted from one person to another easily. Travelling from one country to another makes it even more risky for the person to catch the virus. In fact, one of the main reasons why the virus has been spread all around the globe in such a less time is because of people traveling from one place to another. The pandemic was started in China, but because it was not taken much seriously during the initial days and people were allowed to travel from one city/country to another without any restrictions/precautions. If we had taken the pandemic seriously at that time, then maybe the situation could have been much better. With the ongoing pandemic, flying has become less, so because of that, the airlines are also making less money. As said that, the aviation industry is a very volatile industry, and in our country with less margins and cut throat competition, it is a very difficult time for us. So financially it has affected everyone in various margins.
Coronavirus has not only affected the people working in the aviation industry financially but also mentally. Some flight attendants say that they are going through anxiety and hopelessness while some say that due to the pandemic, they have been given a break from their busy schedule. Approximately 50 – 60 percent of the staff salary was reduced, it was really difficult for them to cope up with the financial problems they had to face because of such a drastic decrease in salaries
Ensuring safety of all the passengers during the flight, but at the same time taking care of your own safety in not really an easy task. Even after being extra cautious during the flights, there are many flight attendants and pilots who still test positive for COVID. For ongoing flights, to ensure the safety of the passengers, they are made to follow the guidelines given by the government. They are given a personal protective kit which includes a mask, gloves, a sanitizer and visor, we also make sure that the passengers maintain proper distance from each other. The food is already kept on the passenger’s seat so that the flight attendants don’t have to come in contact with the passengers often.
Aviation industry has been affected the most because of this pandemic because due to the lockdown, most off the airlines were not flying and were unable to recover the losses, but Air India started ‘Vande Bharat’ flights, so it did manage to survive.
Everyone has invested or planned the financial year according to the pre pandemic situation, however, the pandemic was a surprise entry and none of us had saw it coming. However, now is the time to be more patient and positive and hope that this pandemic gets over soon so that whatever is lost can be recovered in small margins.
