How to survive Law School

Law school is hard. Do not sugar coat it. Law school is demanding, competitive and stressful. You’ve to immerse yourself in textbooks, law classes and legal internships, hoping and praying that when everything will get over, you’ll graduate and pass the bar exam with flying colours.
It’s a long road but it’s a journey well travelled.

Here are few tips which helps a law student to survive Law School:
Maintain your sanity. See family and friends. Hangout with non-law students. Cook. Sleep. Breathe. Exercise. Find yourself a hobby to help you feel relaxed.
Stay focused in long lectures. Treat lectures as an informal test. Take notes.
Don’t procrastinate. Write a deadline earlier than what teacher has provided you with. It can be hard. Euphoria of not worrying about reading for class because you already did it is unparalleled. It feels great.

Finals are hard. Law school involves many activities except just attending the classes. It involves reading, case briefing, class notes, home assignments, joining societies, building resume, editing your resume occasionally, developing cover letters, applying for internships, and studying.
Get way ahead. Start reading the week before class starts. It reduces the stress that comes with law schools.
Step away from textbooks for a few minutes. Engage yourself. Do something productive.
Get some sleep.
Don’t try to hide in the classroom. Be brave and sit in the front. You’ll get the respect of your professors.
Befriend upper level students.
Purchase study guides.
Make use of every resources offered to you.
Try to join extracurricular. Moot courts, trial team and law reviews are extracurricular that employer love to see in your resume.
Enjoy the law school social life. Enjoy your college life.
Socialize on your own terms. Try to meet people outside your section and seniors.
Avoid comparing.
Create a schedule. Do not spend all the time visiting library and meeting law students. Take care of your health.
Maintain your privacy.
Identify the courses you’ll take. For example,
Contracts: You’ll learn the legal requirements of forming a contract.
Torts: Civil wrongs.
Civil Procedure: Rules for filing lawsuits in federal courts.
Criminal Law: State must prove to convict someone of murder, assault, rape, etc.
Legal Writing: Writing legal memos and briefs.
Property: How you get and pass title and restrictions on property.
Constitutional Law: Learn how U.S. constitution has evolved over more than 200 years.
Learn how to brief a case. Read the case several times. Write a short summary. Identify the issues in dispute and rule. Write court’s holding. List the opinions. Make a list of your questions.
Stay calm. Avoid thinking about the exams.

You are the one who gets to live it, not your parents, professors or your law school peers. The burden is on you to decide what you’ve to do with your heart and brain. Not what you should do, nor what someone told you to do, but what you want to do. And I hope you’ll start living this life again while you’re still in Law School.
