India ranks 22 out of 72 countries in the 2016 EF English Proficiency Index published by EF Education First. The index gives the country a score of 57.30 indicating “moderate
Proficiency” India ranks 4th out of 19 Asian countries included in the index. Among Asian countries, Singapore ranks first followed by Malaysia and Philippines
Language can arouse lethal emotions anywhere in the world .In our own country with complete states being formed on linguistic lines so on the very outset language is an inflammable issue. Moreover English language suffers such unease in India is because, mainly, of its origin. Because of how it arrived in India English is always associated with British imperialism. Even though British intended to circulate the language in the country only a select group of people got hold of it – government and higher authorities. It was however rejected by the masses, then and now because of the feeling of subjugation associated with it. As a result of its affiliation with power and stature, both before and after independence, English creates friction in Indian minds making it difficult to find place. Today English is aligned with the more privileged urban networks in India, with the upper and middle class.
The importance of English language within the global economy now provides a continuous rationale for its critical role. India is a home to 1652 languages out of which only 22 languages hold official status. Thus English language holds the power to unite all the different regions in our motherland and connect us to the outside world. English is the language of trade, the vehicle of culture in the modern world. Another reason for English language to be a part of India is that the advancement of science and technology and all the latest research in the world comes to light through English only. This not only strengthens foreign relations but also effective medium for interstate communication too.
CONCLUSION
Language is the key to “opportunity and emancipation” in India. English has an undeniably important place in Indian. Leading intellectuals have duly noted that English is now an Indian language. The vastness of its importance-be it nationally recreationally or vocationally, cannot be overlooked. With the foregoing discussions the importance of English language is crystal clear. Be it for administrative purposes or education or communication- English is making way through modern India at a steady pace. With India moving forward in all dimensions, communication with the outside worked at all the steps is very important and English language is here to save the day. Hence the global plethora of opportunities is closely tied with the shift to English
There is no doubt that English is here to stay for long. Hence truly embracing English with Hindi and other languages is the key to moving forward. The younger generation if our country no longer sees India through the post-colonial lenses that are their attitudes and behaviors toward the language are shaped by globalization and its impact on our economy which alters their lifestyle choices and habits that describe their personalities. Thus only by embracing and promoting the language we can continue to strive to achieve the pinnacle of success individually and a country as a whole.
