“Sex”, a palpable scruffy word in the lexicon of Indians is not only used to denote the two genders .i.e., male and female but also our third biological need, the need for reproduction. Unlike the first two biological needs of hunger and thirst, sex is not imperative for survival but for the continuation of the human race. It serves as an impetus to menstruation in women and nocturnal emission in boys. It prepares the body for copulation when teenagers reach puberty.
“In India, sexual intercourse is a topic that is often demurred as it is considered humiliating and immoral to converse, especially with the elders of the society. Yakking and even expressing about one’s own sexuality and sexual orientation is given the tag of vulgarity and shamefulness. This petrification often compels young adults to suppress their needs and desires and do not permit women to freely express their troubles related to their menstrual cycles and are thus rendered helpless in their struggle to maintain proper intimate hygiene.”
Just because sex is not essential for survival does not mean that it should be ignored and judged. Every person does not have the same set of morale. A man can even steal or kill to satisfy his hunger. Excessive suppression can lead to harrowing troubles, which can have horrendous effects on not only the person but the society as a whole, therefore might be resulting crimes. Lack of knowledge about sexual health and freedom in India poses a big threat to the uneducated from STDs (Sexually Transmitted Disease)and intimate diseases, which are considered unimportant until faced. Moreover, as parents avoid conversation on this topic young adults seek new ways to get information from various sources which sometimes involve gory details, which are mainly lies and not worth knowing or understanding. Their inquisitiveness can prove harmful when they try to get their answers through the internet, porn and social media. Online content houses devious facts which can be misleading as they do no good by creating insatiable fantasies, causing the expectations to rise. Thus, there are chances of becoming besotted with lust and unnecessary wants.
In India, talking about sex and sexual intercourse is a taboo. Even in schools, it is considered an intimate topic. For example: a co-education school teaching about sex, conducts classes separately for boys and girls. Even while teaching about mensuration, the insight isn’t clear and boys think it is a untidy and lack of general knowledge about it and thus causing bullying. Talking about sex in early ages, teaches a lot, helps in controlling unnecessary sexual hormones. Children should have thorough knowledge about sex, sexual intercourse, sexually transmitted diseases, menstruation, etc from early ages and should even be taught in compulsory education for children upto 14 as unprivileged children can have knowledge about it too. As a result, some crimes can be stopped or prevented.
Talking about things solves problems. Therefore open up, to your teachers, parents, family, any well wishers etc and even for adults they should make themselves understandable and approachable.
