United nation’s security council which was established in 1945 along with the inception of united nations and set with the objective of maintaining peace and stability and avoiding conflicts by encouraging negotiations and resolutions and peace treaties has been in desperate need of reforms for a while now. Among the suggested reforms for the security council, one that has been raised and brought into attention a lot more times than others is expansion in number of permanent members of security council. This reform has been in limelight as it serves the purpose of increasing the representation in security council and getting a more diverse representation; which in the end acts in favor of policies of the charter and getting more voices heard in the security council.
There are several prerequisites or conditions that must be completed or met to have a claim or become a candidate for the new opening position of a permanent member in the security council . The state must be a major global player, have a dense and diverse population, an economic power or a strong player amongst the developing economies, relatively larger in geographical proportions, a strong contributor to united nations’ budget, peace keeping reforms and missions.
Considering the prerequisites and conditions it is quite evident that India is definitely a stand out candidate for a spot in security council as a sixth member. India has always been a highlighted global player since its independence, The non- alignment movement started by India during the cold war had major a impact in getting India in the top spots as a global player. In terms of population; India is the world’s second most populous country with the most diverse population of all. moreover geographically as well India is world’s seventh largest country with almost all terrains and when it comes to contribution in peace keeping missions, India has sent about 195,000 personnel to UN missions, the most of any country, and has participated in over 49 of them. 168 Indian peacekeepers have sacrificed the ultimate sacrifice while serving in UN missions. India has also contributed and continues to contribute renowned Force Commanders to UN Missions. In addition to all this India is also world’s largest democracy and an emerging economic power.
All the aforesaid factors help to strengthen India’s claim to the spot in security council as permanent member but one important factor that India needs to work on is foreign policy because getting the desired spot in security council will increase India’s impact and influence around the globe and to prepare for that India must strengthen its foreign policy and have a more staunch stance on global issues rather than making statements that are vague or backed by optimism.
