Infrastructure development for health care is a significant source for understanding a country’s healthcare policy and welfare mechanism. India is among the most populated countries in the world accompanied with permeated poverty and this creates a serious issue to ponder upon. India is a country which is challenged geographically as the sub-tropical climate act as both favorable and unfavorable. Although such sub-tropical climate is favorable for farming, but it proves to be a center for germination of diseases as well. Because of the combined effect of permeated poverty, overloaded population and climatic factors, the population of India is very much susceptible to diseases.
According to Human Development Index, India stands at 119th position out of total 169 countries. China being the world’s largest populated country stands at 89th position which is far better off than India. In India, life expectancy at birth is 64.4 years which is below the world’s average expectancy which is 69.3 years. Whereas life expectancy at birth in China is 73.5 years.
The basic support for a better public healthcare delivery can be described by a good infrastructure. There are five components of health infrastructure, they are- public health organizations, skilled workforce, resources, integrated electronic information system and research. The health infrastructure does not mean the outcomes of health policy of a country rather it means the focus should be on the materialistic resources needed in the domain of public health delivery mechanisms.
Some of the main issues faced by the health infrastructure are- deficient financial supplies as India contributes only 5.1% of its GDP on the health care sector whereas 82% of the health care expenditure is provided by the private sector. Although the state governments are responsible for the health care sector, but they are often out of funds, and they must rely upon the center. Thus, state governments are only able to serve partially. There are shortages of buildings for health care centers. There is deficiency in physical infrastructures like funds inadequacy for drugs and medicines, equipment for laboratories, facilities for diagnosis, latrines, bathrooms, ambulances, etc. there are no effective planning on the functioning of hospitals as it is very important to conduct a periodic check in all departments to see whether they are working in a smooth manner or need an action. One of the main issues is inadequate transport facilities. Most of the villages do not have quick access to health care because of lack of transport. There is also an imbalance between rural and urban as urban people have quick access to health care whereas rural people must travel a long distance to reach a health care center.
We can improve our healthcare infrastructure by creating new infrastructure plans and improving the existing one by contributing more into health care sector and providing hospitals with required resources, by increasing the government expenditure on health sector and by appointing the required staffs and by using new and advanced technology for better healthcare.
Development of health infrastructure provides a lot of benefits as only a healthy country can contribute more into economic development, it provides employment, and advancement in the field of technologies, etc. It is rightly said that “HEALTH IS WEALTH”.
