Inspirational Woman – Rathika Ramasamy

The next Inspirational Woman that we have today is Rathika Ramasamy. She is a Chennai based Wild Life Photographer. Before becoming a full time photographer, she worked as a Software Engineer. She has a degree in Computer Engineering and an MBA.

Ms. Ramasamy received her first camera from her uncle. In 2003 she visited the Keoladeo National Park in Bharatpur and took pictures of birds. She began visiting the Okhla Bird Sanctuary regularly, studying the behaviour of various types of birds. Thereafter, she took to wildlife photography as her professional interest and visited many national parks in India, Kenya, and Tanzania.

Her wildlife photography was featured at the “Clean Ganga Campaign” held in September 2005 at the India International Centre, New Delhi. In 2007, the Jawaharlal Nehru University’s annual calendar featured her bird photographs. The “Birds of India” chose her as one of the Top 20 best photographers of India in 2008, the only woman to receive the distinction. Besides participating in wildlife exhibitions, she conducts workshops on wildlife photography.

MS. Ramasamy is among the founding members of the Photography Arts Association of India.

Ms.Ramasamy self-published her first book, The Best of Wildlife Moments, in 2014.

Ms. Ramasamy’s work has been appreciated and featured in several national and international publications as well as exhibitions, and she has served on the jury panel for several national and international photography competitions. In addition to this, she regularly conducts wildlife photography master classes in the field in order to cultivate new talent. She is a Nikon Professional Member (NPS). She also conducts talks to spread awareness about the importance of conservation and saving Mother Nature for future generations.

Ms. Ramasamy is the founder member of WCI (Wildlife Conservation of India). For her, wildlife photography is not only a passion, but is also a powerful medium to connect and conserve nature. With this in mind, she clicks every picture with the motto: Every time I press the shutter, it’s one step closer to Mother Nature. Ms. Ramasamy has been mentioned in the 10th Standard Science text book this year 2019 edition of Tamil Nadu Government state syllabus.

Accolades and recognition:

-In September 2005, she participated in the “Clean Ganga Campaign” and exhibited her work at the India International Center, New Delhi along with her photographer friends. 

-2005, She was one of the founder member of Photography Art Association of India, PAAI, photography forum for photographers

-In 2007, she worked on the calendar for the prestigious Jawaharlal Nehru University that featured birds of the campus, New Delhi. 

-She was selected as one of the top bird photographers in India by ‘Birds of India’ in 2008. 

– 2009 October- Doordarshan honoured her as first wildlife women photographer in India and featured her work in DD national.

-‘Uccelli in Natura’, an Italian magazine on birds, selected and featured her as the best bird photographer from Asia.

 -2009 September -Her famous Sarus crane dance image selected for cover image of “Helm dictionary of scientific birdnames”.

-2015 and 2019 Rathika is one of the jury for 4th and 7th National Photography Awards, organized by Photo Division Ministry of Information & Broadcasting, New Delhi

-2016 She was invited to be one of the Jury for the Siena International Photo Awards

-2016 Jury for URBAN 2016  and URBAN 2018 Photo Awards, Italy

-Jury for the DCP Annual Awards 2017, 2018

-Jury for the” I Click PHOTOGRAPHY, 2017

Jury for the “National Photography Contest”, Costa Rican Ornithology Association“, 2017

-Jury for the “Youth4clicks “ contest  Saevus magazine, year 2017-2018, 2018-2019

-2018  She was cited to be the best known woman photographer across the world on the internet.

Awards

-Feb 2015  Rathika has been conferred the “Inspiring Icon Award” from the prestigious Sathyabama University, Chennai.

– June 2015  She has been conferred the ICF( The International Camera Fair)award for the outstanding performance and achievements in wildlife photography.

-October 2018 She has been awarded “Inidhu environment award.

-Feb 2020 ,Rathika received the the Literary(புலமை ) category of Sakthi award from Puthiya Thalaimurai TV group, Chennai.

-Feb 2020, Rathika was conferred the “Women of Excellence “,Lens queen award from Karpaga Vinayaga College of Engineering Technology, Chengalpatt,Tamil Nadu.

-Feb 2020, Rathika received the Women of wonder-Realistic Awards 2020

-March 2020,“Women achiever 2K20” Award from Asan memorial institution group.
