International Trade on Leather and Footwear

Leather and leather products are among the most widely traded products worldwide, and they are based on a renewable and readily available resource. Production and supply have gradually moved from industrialized to developing countries and emerging economies, which are now becoming major players in the trade. In fact, developing and emerging economies can now manage the whole supply chain on their own and are fast becoming the most important suppliers of value-added finished products. About 45% of footwear, for example, is made in China. The supply chain is global and a great deal of trade is nowadays South-South and South-North.

The global leather industry is booming due to the growing demand of leather products worldwide, while the world’s top 10 largest leather producing countries, top leather exporters and leather importers continue to be some of the major contributors to the growth of the market. Over the recent years, the growing demand for luxury fashion products such as handbags, wallet and other fashion accessories driven by the rising spending on personal goods has resulted the rapid increase in the leather production and leather trade around the world. As the global market for leather goods continues to be lucrative, the world’s largest leather producing countries and the top leather exporters are expected to witness growing profit over the near future.

Leather industry is one of the oldest manufacturing sectors. The raw material used in leather industry is derived from the livestock or animal farming industry, then being put through several processes including tanning and finishing etc. Today, leather is still one of the most luxury materials that are used to produce a wide range of high-end products such as leather footwear, leather bags, leather garments, and so on.

The largest producing countries in 2020 is China, Brazil, Russia, India. China’s dominant position in the world’s top 10 largest leather producing countries is expected to be further strengthened in the near future.

You can get luxury products in China leather market. Some of the well-known brands such as Prada, Dolce & Gabbana, Burberry have their production done in China. China has several luxury leather markets that sell a diverse range of products. Therefore, be ready to be spoilt for choices in the market.

India is the 2nd largest producer of footwear, 2nd largest exporter of Leather Garments, the 5th largest exporter of Leather Goods and 3rd Largest Exporter of Saddlery and Harness items.

Opportunity to set-up export units: India has trade agreements with Japan, Korea, ASEAN, Chile etc., and is negotiating Free Trade Agreement with the European Union, Australia etc. The leather industry in India has abundance of  raw materials with 20% of world cattle & buffalo and 11% of world goat & sheep population. Women employment is predominant in Leather products industry with about 30% share. The Leather industry in India has one of the youngest workforces with 55% of the workforce below 35 years of age.

The footwear sector is a very significant segment of the leather industry in India; rather it is the engine of growth for the entire Indian leather industry. India is the second largest global producer of footwear after China, accounting for 11.63% of global footwear production of 17.7 billion pairs. India produces 2065 million pairs of different categories of footwear.

The Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT) has come out with quality control norms for different leather footwear including anti-riot shoes with a view to contain imports and production of sub-standard products in the country.

According to a DPIIT notification, the products would have to conform to the specified standards and bear the standard mark under a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS)Advertisement.

India Trade Promotion Organisation (ITPO) had organized India International Footwear Fair (IIFF)in 2019 in Delhi. IIFF was launched in 2015 and this will be the fifth edition of the event.

IIFF will have on display the entire range of products relating to footwear and leather industries: footwear, raw material, finished products and auxiliary products such as Synthetic material, finished leather; shoe components – uppers, soles, heels, counters, lasts; footwear machinery and equipment, process technology, software, chemicals and publications.
