Staying at home came with an increased need for internet from people who barely needed much before. The Covid-19 pandemic is demanding many people to work or study from home, which means that internet has become of paramount importance, in the daily lives of millions of people around the world. It has also become the primary source of entertainment.
The dictionary defines Internet as a global wide area network, that connects computer systems across the world, but what we have seen in the past few months is, it not only connecting computer systems but also people operating the computer systems.
So how is the internet coping with the most sudden burst of usage in its history? There are understandable signs of strain: Wi-Fi that slows down every other minute, websites that won’t load, video calls that keep reconnecting. But despite the hiccups, the internet is doing just fine. In fact, the Covid-19 crisis is driving the biggest expansion in years in the internet industry. According to Internet World Stats, almost 4.57 billion, people were active internet users as of July 2020, encompassing 59 percent of the global population.
Millions of people around the world are staying at home which is why the technology is improving, and coming hand-in-hand with the lockdown. People are now attending online classes, virtual meetings, events or even parties through zoom calls while staying at home and all of that would not be possible without internet.
Personally, I don’t think I can go a day without it. It has kept me sane during this pandemic. I’ve started having online lectures which would’ve been unworkable without internet. Staying at home has also given me a lot of time to check out a lot of movies and series on Netflix, Prime Video, YouTube and other platforms, which again requires internet. Internet was always an integral part of my life but now it has become an essential in my daily life.
With the rise in internet consumption and digital maturity, another raise we have seen is, in the charges for internet and the amount consumers are spending on it. With a good internet, comes a major chunk of your salary that goes to the provider.
People have become way more gadget and tech-friendly than they ever were. At times it is exhausting to be on the internet all day but, can’t live with it, can’t live without it. It has always been a luxury, but a lot has changed since the coronavirus outbreak, like people upgraded to an internet plan, which costs thrice the previous plan.
It has also become an essential to pay bills, go for virtual grocery runs, shopping for essentials, etc. There is almost nothing that you cannot find on the internet, which is a relief for all the people not wanting to step out of the house.
As we are avoiding to step out of the house, internet is pretty much being our best friend. From paying bills to ordering groceries and other such chores are being done on the internet itself which is making it really convenient for us.
What is comprehensible is that people are filling the gaps left from socializing and live events with apps and video communications that operate with the help of internet. It is now a bigger part in people’s lives than it ever was.
