In India, every year more than 50000 pregnant women are dying because of pregnancy related complication. Every year close to 13 lakhs dying because of complications which they face in the initial weeks. Majority of these 13 lakhs, two third of the babies are dying during the first four weeks. 75 percentage they die in the first week itself, in the 75 percentage majority babies die in the first two days itself. It is very clear that this can be prevented when women go for institutional delivery. When they go to hospitals or institutions for delivering the baby, these problems can be addressed. But in India even today lot of pregnant women don’t prefer institutional deliveries because of various reasons, particularly poverty is the biggest reason. If they go to hospital, then that is going to result in more expenses, so poverty is the main reason.
If we have to address this problem, then we have to promote institutional deliveries. Here comes Janani Suraksha Yojana which aims to promote the institutional delivery. JananiSurakshaYojana (JSY) is a safe motherhood intervention under the National Health Mission. It is being implemented with the objective of reducing maternal and neonatal mortality by promoting institutional delivery among poor pregnant women. When we give some cash incentive then that will motivate the poor women to come to hospital for delivering the baby. So, under this program thousand rupees to 2000 rupees will be given to the pregnant women as incentive when they go for institutional deliveries, it varies based on the state, based on the area, rural or urban. They can choose government hospital, or they can even use private hospitals enrolled under this program. There are cases where women are very particular that they prefer giving birth in their home. In that case 500 rupees of financial assistance will be given to those pregnant mothers. But however, they will be connected with the Asha worker. So, you have to register with Asha worker. Asha worker will be going and will be providing some basic care. 500 rupees will be given to them to take care of themselves. The core idea of this scheme is to promote institution delivery but however you cannot forcibly bring up some kind of changes; o there are some people they still prefer non-institutional deliveries i.e., still prefer giving birth at home, in that case if they register there will be support from Asha worker.
Here only condition is nearly focusing on pregnant women who are below poverty line. All these states are divided into two categories; high performing states and low performing states. Based on the percentage of institution delivery the states are divided. So, in terms of financial assistance pregnant women in low performing states will be given some additional money. In both these states i.e., low performing and high performing you have urban area and rural areas. Financial assistance for pregnant women from rural areas will be even more slightly higher. I hope you got the idea of journey structures which aims to promote institutional delivery among pregnant women.
