Ever since I was enrolled in kindergarten by my parents, I’ve been asked numerous amount of times what my ambition was.
At first I would answer a scientist because of all the cartoons that depicted scientists to be cool but later on it changed to cricketer, footballer and even a geologist after I watched the latest Indiana Jones movie that released back then. The reality however, struck me in the final years of high school learning when we were asked to pick one of the three streams namely Science, Commerce and Arts. I was very much into technology, still am and hence I went ahead with science only with a keen interest in physics and computers. Learning more about coding and computers was a good experience.
However, the same couldn’t be said about the other subjects. This is the time when I realised that choosing the right stream after my 12th was of paramount importance because
a) it was the only last chance in my mind to choose the career path I wanted and
b) only chance to get out of the suffering inflicted by the science stream.
Hence, I wandered around various different streams, researching about them on the internet and among my peers. Finally, I realised that most people were going for engineering. Second most popular option was a bachelor’s in business administration (B.B.A). I found the second option to be compelling enough but the thought of working till I’m 60 made no sense.
I wanted to choose a career where I could be my own boss, work as long as I liked and one which gave me a certain respectable position in the society. Hence, I reached at the doorstep of the legal career. To be sure that I have interest in this field, I tried reading numerous books on the struggles of a budding lawyer and journeys in law school and this compelled me even further. Most freedom fighters and people of importance in the independence struggle such as Mahatma Gandhi, Dr. B.R. Ambedkar and Lal bahadur Shastri were all exceptional at what they set out to do. The fact that I could overcome many of my fears by doing this one course had me hooked. I also found out that law had various other opportunities.
I have always wanted to be a person with a good amount of responsibilities in the society and this career option would be the perfect one to help me live my dream. There was Litigation, judiciary, civil services, police service, corporate law, legal advisory, public offices such as the advocate general etc. I also found out that politicians and people at higher levels of the government were all masters of understanding the law and implementing them. I also visited the High Court of Karnataka just to be sure of how the environment was. What I noticed was that the situation in an actual court of law was very different from that depicted in movies. It was not filled with loud arguments and slander, but rather humble presentations and reasonable consideration by the Hon’ble judges. The true nobleness of the occupation was visible to me in a court of law. This was the final strike on the nail that cemented the idea for me. I had finally decided to take up law. I put forward my plan to my parents and they were willing enough to let me choose my own path.
Finally, I gave an entrance test and an interview for the same and got into a law school, a dream had come true finally. At the end I would like to mention that I am happy that I chose law and am looking forward to the various opportunities at law school, in my career and in my life.
