Laws Against Child Abuse

According to the National Crime Records Bureau 1 in 4 families don’t even come forward to report such cases. And the cases don’t even stop.

In 2012 the Government introduced Protection of Children from Sexual Offences (POCSO) Act. Basically the idea behind the act was that there should be a special act which should deal with children. Before this any kind of Child Abuse whether it’s sexual assault or any other kind of child abuse was only dealt in IPC.

The POCSO Act of 2012 was enacted with the goal of protecting children from Sexual Assault and pornography while also protecting their interests. It is a gender neutral act. The procedure should be carried in a child friendly manner.

Children need to be educated, parents need to understand and be aware of environment as most of the accused individuals belong to the same family tree. Child abuse is a big worry in today’s society, and the POCSO Act recognizes that the wellbeing of the child and their emotional, physical, social and psychological development takes precedence and the Juvenile Justice Act has taken a step toward putting matured offenders under the attention of the court system. This is a great initiative that will almost certainly result in fewer crimes against children.

Sexual abuse of a child is veiled in secrecy and it traumatizes the child for which these strict laws are essential. Children are one of the most fragile segment of society and it is the duty of elders to protect them. Atrocities against children are becoming more common. The POCSO Act, the Juvenile Justice Act, and other laws have aided in changing the system, and in addition to the legal framework, it is also the family’s right to come forward to the concerned authorities if the stated legislations are to function even better.

A lot of people end up ignoring the rights of their own children surely they should know about such laws. In 2012, POCSO Act was passed for granting strict punishment against child sexual abuse. This is a great move and it will surely lead to a reduction in crimes against children. The minimum punishment for the offenders is 10 years and extended to life. It is a very child – friendly manner. The Child welfare committee is formed for speedy justice for crimes against children. A child helpline number i.e 1098 is available.

It is important for parents to provide a safe environment for their children and to teach them how to defend themselves from sexual harassment.  Every Individual has a right to life and that too with dignity and the same applies for children also. The POCSO Act has been proven to building up of a safer environment for children which is very needed for their socio – psychiatric development.
