“Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender and Intersex community”- a heavy statement in India, screaming for importance, recognition, protection and acceptance. LGBTQ or pride just has been focused in recent years demanding for equality, as for other heterosexual relationships or preferences in general. It basically means accepting one’s sexuality, be it in any form same or different gender or asexual. In India, people recognising something other than love, attraction, infatuation, marriage or accepting one’s preference in body of other gender, is highly repulsive and panic oriented.
Equality to the LGBTQ+ community in India is a long journey from now. To observe the dignity and importance, be it mental health or physical health, hampered due to being pressurized to accept something one is not, bring self-doubt, lack of self-esteem, hatred towards people imposing these societal rules be it family or friends or people in general, is draining and questioning humanity as a whole.
As for statutes in India: The right of equality before law and equal protection under the law is guaranteed in Articles 14 and Article 21 of the Indian Constitution. In April 2014, the Supreme Court of India ruled in “NALSA v. Union of India” that the rights and freedoms of transgender people in India were protected under the Constitution. in September 2018, the Supreme Court also decriminalized adult consensual same-sex relationships in the Section 377 judgment review.
The real question is, Is everything said in the provisions obeyed or there are people who continue disrespecting them? To answer this question, I want to speak about a personal experience seen. Once in a get-together, we friends were having a light hearted conversation regarding the new found LGBTQ rules in India, to this, a friend of mine said, “Yes, I support this initiative, but I won’t like if my child is one of them, I would not be able to support him/her or atleast be disappointed.” And to say, this might have been a personal opinion but this isn’t acceptance. In India, we cannot openly converse, even know about mensuration, coitus, etc, sexual preference has a long way ahead. But there has been some instances where people came forth openly expressing and it’s refreshing to see that, yes people are recognising and accepting their own and other’s preferences, choices and interests.
Talking about transgender community: there are not many people who know that’s it’s mainly about not being interested or comfortable with the birth gender and organs or clothes or outlooks or physical appearance, it’s all about changing ones gender to more preferable gender which gives confidence and positivity mentally. Even since high school level of someone is behaving different from oneself and intended to wear clothes or has likes dislikes of other genders is bullied be it intentionally or unintentionally or for mere fun, because something might be funny for us now, but can be devastating for the other person.
In the end, I would like to say, “people will judge, no matter how good we are how bad we are, but why not give people to talk about something which we did and enjoyed and felt confident about.” Therefore be confident, be you. In this harsh society, the best we can do it, make it a slight better place, by respecting each other and other’s choices. And it’s “Pride”, so raise your voices who say against this acceptance and make small changes in someone’s life and eventually in the society.
