MAN AS A SOCIAL ANIMAL

ABSTRACT

Man has to live in society for his existence and welfare. In almost all aspect of his life he feels the need of society. Biologically and psychologically he is compelled to live in society because without society man has no value. So Society play a great role in man life as man is incomplete without society. In this article, I put more attention towards man need, necessity etc toward Society in order to live a better life.

INTRODUCTION

Man is by nature a social animal, is an individual who is unsocial naturally and not accidentally is either beneath our notice or more than human. Society is something that precedes the individual. Society play a great role in every man life. Man cannot live alone. He must satisfy certain natural basic needs in order to survive. He has to enter into relationships with his fellowmen for living a life. No man can break the shackles of mutual dependence. This begins perhaps between the embryo and the mother and continues till his last breath. The need of the embryo may be more physical than mental, but the mother’s need is the other way round. The day he born to the day he leave the society, he lives in society on this planet. The statement that a man is a social animal implies that man cannot live without society. Society is indispensable for him. He needs society as matter of nature, necessity and for his well being. All these three implications are explained as follows:

1.) MAN IS A SOCIAL ANIMAL BY NATURE

Man is a social animal because his nature makes him so. Sociality or Sociability is his natural instinct. He can’t but live in society. All his human qualities such as to think to enquire to learn language, to play and work only developed in human society. All this developed through interaction with others. One can’t be a normal being in isolation. His nature compels him to live with his fellow beings. He can’t afford to live alone.

2.) MAN LIVES IN SOCIETY FOR NECESSITY

Man lives in society because necessity compels him so. Many of his needs will remain unsatisfied if he does not have the cooperation of his fellow beings. Every individual is the off- spring of a social relationship established between man and woman. The child is brought up under the care of his parents and learns the lessons of citizenship in their company. All his needs and necessities compels him to live in society. Many of his needs and necessities will remain unfulfilled without the co-operation of his fellow beings. His psychological safety, social recognition, loves and self-actualization needs only fulfilled only within the course of living in society. He is totally dependent for his survival upon the existence of society. Human baby is brought up under the care of his parents and family members.

3.) MAN LIVES IN SOCIETY FOR MENTAL AND INTELLECTUAL DEVELOPMENT

Man lives in society for his mental and intellectual development. Society preserves our culture and transmits it to succeeding generations. It both liberates and limits our- potentialities as individuals and moulds our attitudes, our beliefs, our morals and ideals. Development of human mind and self is possible only living in society. Society moulds our attitudes, beliefs, morals, ideals and thereby moulds individual personality. With the course of living and with the process of socialization man’s personality develops and he became a fully fledged individual. Man acquires a self or personality only living in a society. From birth to death individual acquires different social qualities by social interaction with his fellow beings which moulds his personality. Individual mind without society remains undeveloped at infant stage. Society” preserves and transmits culture to succeeding generations. The cultural heritage determines man’s personality by molding his attitudes, beliefs, morals and ideals. With the help of social heritage man’s in born potentialities are unfolded.

CONCLUSION

it may be concluded that man is a social animal. Individual and society are interrelated and interdependent. Both are complementary and supplementary to each other. The relationship between the individual and the society is not one-sided, both are essential for the comprehension of either. In the words of Mac Iver “No one can really be an absolute individualist, any more than any one can be an absolute socialist, for the individual and the society interest one another and depend upon one another”.
