Yesterday a post on instagram caught my attention. It hypothized that mostly western cultures believed that there should be a purpose for life, also some indigenous cultures believe we are alive just as the nature, it said that we don’t need to achieve anything to be valid in our humannness. Even if this sentence with its facts is partially true, it is false to not find a meaning or a purpose in life. In my terms, Life is a very simple subject with its complicated factors and such posts makes the reader even more confused about life in general. You don’t necessarily have to work, to make money in order to find meaning of life in productivity. It’s the reader’s choice to choose whatever he wants, even if he chooses just to sit idle his whole life.
More amusing thing is that they are comparing – finding a purpose, to capitalism. They are comparing productivity to capitalism. Are we not different from each other? Do we not hold our unique abilities for thinking? Then what is wrong in it if some people believe making money or working to be productive. Why is it called capitalism then and why not man’s meaning to his life.
Man’s search for meaning by Frankl viktor, it is a well renowned book which elaborates this topic more than perfectly. The author/ psycologist himself was a prisoner in one of the Nazi concentration camps, where he experienced deaths, punishments, torture and still he could find a meaning in life and decided to continue his work even though he was a prisoner. On the first day itself at the concentration camp, all his life’s work was destroyed in seconds still he made a pact to himself to never give-up and redid his life’s work by writing on small pieces of paper, stealing, gathering from someone or by just memorizing them in some cases.
Man’s meaning or pupose is the only thing that enables his mind, to continue his life without the confusion he carries. It brings clarity to the man’s decisions. Man’s search for meaning can be anything he desires, it can be love, work, to make money, to meditate, whatever he desires!! And why is that we have to follow a culture to be part of society, can’t we be our own being, not influenced by others, living the life as we want, to gain freedom from such prejudiced views mentioned in the above post. This culture, their views in the end it’s all limited, we have to move past that to experience complete freedom eventually if anything a society needs is harmony, peace and kindness, if that’s what the person brings to the society he can be whatever he wants. Anything he does for the freedom he desires, is his purpose in life, this is HIS search for meaning, and this where he is valid in his humanness.
