Introduction
Psychiatric emergencies are behavioural changes which results in worsening of mental illnesses. This can result in great risks and serious conditions which need immediate treatment and therapeutic intervention. They have a feeling of prejudice, fear and exclusion. Particularly, the term stigma has negative consequences in mentally ill and behavioral patients. All such people are entitled to receive all the benefits and mental health care available. They should be treated with humanity and respect. They are entitled to the same rights, social and medical care just like others.
Legislative Reform and Advocacy
The people who are suffering from mental Illness intends to prohibit discrimination, improves protection and helps them with employment opportunities, education and housing. There was a speech on human rights “Rights of persons with disabilities” which was promoted by the United Nations conventions and gave an insight into the essential framework for legislative reforms. This includes protection of the first generation against coercion, fraud and forced treatment and protection of the second generation which requires the governments and organizations to help those people with financial aid, social, economic and health support. This will help in removing all the barriers of the mentally ill and regarded people to social participation. These reforms and efforts are taken to help the mentally ill people to come forward and use their basic rights and freedom which is present in the legislation. They have the right to complaint if they are trapped in any unfair procedure.
According to the World Health Organization (WHO), it defines advocacy as a term which helps in broadening the notion of mental health issues and its importance and ensures that these topics are on the government’s agenda. The term advocacy is kind of an undefined plethora which covers awareness raising, education, mutual help, disseminating information, protecting the disadvantaged and denouncing justice. This is very important as it guides us and directs changes in legislation and policies whenever required.
Psychiatric emergencies should be included in such legislative reforms and policies. It is very crucial to have emergency response regulations covering minimum staff and facility criteria. The hospital infrastructure should increase and the legislation allows for the investment purpose regarding the same as they are very much in demand. Patients face difficulty to receive assistance during their time of crisis, thus legislation has taken efforts to increase the hospital infrastructure.
Stigma Reduction in Psychiatric Emergencies
Everyone should work on intervention measures in order to reduce stigma. We must facilitate and divide it into contact with mentally ill, education, stigma self management, protest, social activism and advocacy. The stigma devalues the behavioral patients and health networks have set up to support those people. The mental health professionals while they are teaching their students, can teach them and encourage them to learn about political and professional activism through contact techniques. This will create an idea and encourage them that recovery is not just a symptom control.
Protest and Social Activism
Different rallies and protests highlight the injustice of stigma as well as reprimand offenders for the practice of prejudice and stereotyping. There have been campaigns to reduce discrimination which provides a recuperate effect where prejudices about a particular group remain worsen.
