#ME TOO MOVEMENT
If you frequently use the social media than you may surely see the #metoo on twitter, Facebook or Instagram and more. What does the movement is all about you will by the end of this article basically in simple words the movement is for sexual harassment, sexual assault or bulling victims who survived from these mishaps and to establish the bond to share their story with all people around. People globally supported the movement in order to show empathy towards the victims
History behind the movement
The #Metoo phrase was first coined in 2006 by Tarana Burke she is an advocate for women in new York and she wanted a way to empower the women who had gone through sexual abuse by letting them know that they’re not alone. Through this movement she wanted to show the empathy and solidarity by showing the strength of number of people specially to young vulnerable women who are educationally and financially backward in the society. Then in 2017 the popular American actress Alyssa Milano reintroduced this phrase in order to encourage men and women to share their story as a part of anti-sexual harassment movement. The result of this step of actress is mind-blowing large number of people came up with their story by using #metoo across many social media platforms the number of high profile people get exposed and many of them supported also like Jennifer Lawrence, Gwyneth Paltrow, Ashley etc. famous American celebrities followed this movement and the widespread media coverage and discussions, particularly in Hollywood led to termination of high profile people from their positions as well as faced criticism and backlash
Movement in India
In October 2018 #Metoo movement against sexual abuse and harassment perpetrated by powerful men in the society reached to India’s public disclosure. In India also a huge number of people came out with their stories and allegation on many different social media platforms. Allegations also found on the respected personalities, but perhaps the most high profile case was against former junior external affairs minister M.J Akbar he is former editor also at least 10 women mostly the journalist accused him. Journalist Priya Ramani she accused him for inviting her to his hotel room for a job interview and behaving inappropriately. She herself filed the 41 pages defamation suit. Two years later the Delhi High court acquitted all her charges taking into consideration the difficulties women faced in filling complaints. The court said “The right of reputation cannot be protected at the cost of dignity ” It was the landmark judgement and celebrated by women . As the movement is wide spread ,many film industry people came up with their allegations very firstly film maker Vinta Nanda spoke against actor Alok Nath whom she accused of rape and by other women in the industry like Sandhya Mridul, singer Sona Mohapatra . but his case was dismissed due to the lack of evidence . the second case filed under the movement was against actor Nana Patekar who was accused by the Actor Tanushree Dutta this case was also dropped because of lack of evidence, charges also filed against the singer Anu Malik he was also suspended from the jury of Indian Idol
So in my views this very successful movement because the aim of the movement is to empower the women to come up strongly with their stories and to make them feel that they not alone, we all are with them and they can also live the normal life which they deserve and the aim is getting fulfilled.
