Non Resident Indian
An NRI is an Indian citizen who has gone out of India or who has stayed outside India for any reason other than employment, or who has gone out of India or who has stayed outside India for carrying on business or vocation outside India, or who has gone out of India or who has stayed outside India for any other reason indicating his intention to stay out. In simple words, it can be said that Any Indian who lives outside the country, that is, in a foreign country, is referred to as a non-resident Indian. They are Indian citizens, yet they do not reside in India. NRIs have basic rights in India, and the Indian government protects them wherever they travel.
Person of Indian origin
Any person from another country (except Pakistan, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, China, Iran, Bhutan, Sri Lanka, and Nepal) who held an Indian passport at any time, or whose parents or grandparents were born in India, or who is the spouse of an Indian citizen or a PIO, is considered to be of Indian origin.
A citizen of a foreign country (other than a citizen of Bangladesh or Pakistan) is a PIO if he or she has ever held an Indian passport; OR he or she or either of his or her parents or grandparents was a citizen of India; OR he or she is the spouse (not a citizen of Bangladesh or Pakistan) of an Indian citizen; OR he or she has ever held an Indian passport; OR he or she is a spouse (not a citizen of Bangladesh or Pakistan) of an
moreover, Pio cardholders enjoy a number of advantages, including not needing a VISA to visit India for a period of 15 years from the date of issuing of their card. They are exempt from FRRO or FRO registration if their stay in India does not exceed 180 days. They have the same financial and educational perks as NRIs, including the ability for their children to study at Indian colleges under general quotas.
Both NRI and PIO seems to be relatively similar concepts but still have a number of differences between, these differences are discussed in the table below.
