old is gold

There was a time when Traditions was such a important and fun part of the festivals. I’m a Hindu, In hindus there are so many Traditions and Festivals. It’s all so exciting during the Festivals, at least it was before the lockdown and the whole covid situation. As time passed many traditions were cut short or just omitted, to be specific let’s talk about the festival of light – DIWALI.

I remember my first Diwali, when I started understanding the importance of a festival and why are they held. My Nani or like I used to call her Aaiajji used to tell me all the stories of her childhood, the excitement, the crazy fun they must have had. To be honest she lived a tough life, she was an orphan and even though growing at their cousins place they had a blast. She used to tell me stories, of how she and her cousins used to get up early on “pahili sakal” or the first day of Diwali,  sweeping the house was the first task of the day. They took Bath applying sandalwood over their bodies coming out fresh and fragrant . And it was a tradition to crush this fruit called “chirrati” with their feet. This has a symbolic meaning of crushing the negative vibes within our society, within ourselves. This ancient tradition represents one of the stories of the Indian mythology, when a demon called Narkasur was killed crushed under the feets of goddess Lakshmi, and thus we welcome Lakshmi in doing so. Then, they got the chance to wear new traditional clothes and enjoy faral with their families and went on to burst crackers .

In my own experience I think I have done all these traditions almost every year, but lockdown and pandemic during festivals have lowered the morale in the Indian society. Now, I realize it’s true when our grandfather and grandmothers used to say “olden days were the golden days”. Teenagers or at least this teenager definitely misses the old days when there was enjoyment as well as learning. The lockdown during the pandemic was only for 2 years but for the children it was like an eternity, there is so much they have missed during all these diseases and deaths.

No one should live a life like this, everyone has a right to enjoy their lifetime. I feel sad for my 5 year old cousin sister who doesn’t even know what are Traditions and the meaning behind such tradition during festivals. I understand the fact now, that there should be a older person in a family, It brings immense value in the family. We don’t know how much we can learn from our elderly. I hope next year would bring a basket of joy to each of our families and lit the dimmed morale in the Indian society.
